Mini One immobilizer problem

Alright, so my 2007 Mini One diesel is playing up. It seems to be an immobilizer problem. Sometimes the engine won't start at all, other times it starts for a second and then dies. There's an error stored in the memory, so I'm guessing it's not just a random thing. From what I've read, it could be the key programming that's gone wrong. Has anyone had this before?

Oh dear, that sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my previous car, although it was a different make. The anti-theft system just wouldn't recognize the key sometimes. Was there any warning sign before this happened? Perhaps the ignition control was acting up?

No real warning signs, it just happened. When you say ignition control, what exactly do you mean? Is that something I can check myself, or is it definitely a 'take it to the workshop' kind of thing?

Well, based on my limited experience, it does sound like the key programming. The ignition control is basically the system that verifies the key's signal. I'm no expert, but if the error memory points to a key issue, and the symptoms are as you describe, I would suspect the programming of the key is incorrect. I think you should seek professional help with car electronics. An immobilizer bypass is not a good solution, it may cause issues with your anti-theft system. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to get the key reprogrammed.

Just wanted to update you. I got the key reprogrammed. Cost me 45€. Seems the car electronics were being fussy about the key's coding. Everything's back to normal now, thanks for your help.
