Thank you for your reply. I have visually inspected the exhaust system, but I am not very knowledgeable about cars. I did notice a slight hissing sound, possibly indicating an exhaust leak. Where exactly should I be looking on the exhaust pipe for damage? And could a faulty catalytic converter also cause these issues, or is it more likely the oxygen sensor?

The hissing sound does suggest an exhaust leak. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact location without a proper inspection. While a faulty catalytic converter can cause similar symptoms, the oxygen sensor is a more common culprit. I suggest taking it to a trusted workshop for a diagnosis. Continuing to drive with an exhaust leak and a malfunctioning oxygen sensor can potentially damage the catalytic converter, leading to even more costly repairs.

I wanted to provide an update. After taking my Mini One to a workshop, it turned out to be a defective oxygen sensor as we suspected. They replaced it, and also found a small exhaust leak near the exhaust pipe, which they fixed. The engine light is now off, and the car runs smoothly again. The total cost was around 375€ Thank you for your help and insights!

That does sound concerning. I experienced something similar with my old vehicle, a different brand but the symptoms were alike. The engine light illuminated, and I noticed a strong odor. Have you inspected the exhaust pipe for any visible damage or listened for unusual noises indicating an exhaust leak? Also, has there been any change in your fuel consumption lately?
