Cheers for the quick reply! Clock spring...that's a new one for me. Where is that located, and is it easy to check myself? And regarding the brake light switch, is there a simple way to test it, or do I need a multimeter?

Clock spring is behind the steering wheel, allows electrical connections to the steering wheel components (horn, airbag, cruise control switches) to work while the wheel turns. Messing with the airbag system can be risky business if you don't know what you're doing. Brake light switch, you can usually see if the brake lights come on when you press the pedal. If they don't, that's your first clue. Since you've got a generic error code and aren't seeing anything obvious, I'd advise taking it to a workshop. Could be a simple fix, or something more involved. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks a lot for your input. Took it to the shop and they confirmed what you suspected. They found a defective connector on the cruise control. Luckily nothing major, just cleaned the contacts and replaced the connector. All in, cost me 95€. Cruise control is working again, finally!

Sounds familiar. Had a similar gremlin in my old Passat. Cruise control packed it in, and it turned out to be a dodgy clock spring. Did you check the basics first? Brake light switch functioning correctly? Any weird dashboard light behaviour? A faulty fuse box can also cause havoc with cruise control systems. Worth a look before you tear everything apart. Start with checking the fuses.
