Mini Countryman Diesel problems with the engine, engine indicator light keeps coming on

Hello everyone, I have a 2012 Mini Countryman with a diesel engine and 104,567 km on the clock. I have recently started experiencing the following problems: - Black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating - Check Engine light on - Engine power loss - Exhaust leak - Strong exhaust odor I suspect it is related to an exhaust aftertreatment malfunction. Has anyone had similar experiences? How was your experience at the mechanic and what solutions were offered to you? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2015 Mini Cooper. I also had the symptoms of black smoke, the check engine light, loss of power and a strong exhaust odor. During the inspection at the garage, it turned out that one of the lambda sensors was defective. The problem should not be underestimated, as a defective lambda sensor can lead to an incorrect air-fuel mixture, which not only increases fuel consumption but can also put a strain on other engine components. As a result, the defective sensor was replaced and the engine ran perfectly again. It may well be that something similar is at play with your Mini. It's best to have it checked at the workshop as soon as possible. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for your reply! That sounds pretty similar to my problems. Do you remember how much you paid for the repair? Were there any other problems afterwards or did everything run smoothly again? Best regards!

Hey, sure, I can help you with that. After I went to the mechanic, the problem with the exhaust aftertreatment malfunction was finally solved. It turned out that one of the lambda sensors was the cause. The repair cost me €375. Since then, my Mini has been running perfectly again, the black smoke is gone and the check engine light is off. No more loss of power and the exhaust smell has also disappeared. So, the investment was definitely worth it. If you have similar symptoms, I would recommend you get it checked as soon as possible. Good luck and hopefully your Mini will soon be fit again! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the info! That sounds really promising. I went to the garage yesterday and luckily it was only the lambda sensor. They replaced the part straight away and also explained to me how important it is for exhaust gas aftertreatment. It cost me around €350 in total. Now the Mini is running perfectly again - no more clouds of smoke, the check engine light is off, and the exhaust smell is gone too. A real relief! Thanks again for your advice. It really paid off to act quickly. Best regards!

I have a mini countryman r60 diesel of 2017, I have a loss of power a year ago that was solved by turning off the vehicle, a month ago the engine light came on and it seems that it was carbon that rolling and throwing an injector cleaner turned off the witness but I have been noticing that when I stop the car at a traffic light in first gear I have to accelerate a lot to leave because otherwise it loses power and I do not know what it can be. Can you help me? Thank you

It sounds like you might be experiencing a problem with your vehicle's fuel system. The symptoms you're describing could be due to a clogged fuel filter, a failing fuel pump, or a problem with the fuel injectors. I would recommend starting with the simplest check - replacing the fuel filter. If the problem persists, it might be worth having a mechanic inspect the fuel pump and injectors. Remember, issues with power loss can be safety-relevant, so it's important to have it checked out as soon as possible.
