Check engine light on

Hi, I have a problem with my Mini Cooper Diesel from 2009. The indicator light comes on, the engine switches itself off from time to time, there is a loss of power and unstable engine behavior. In addition, the exhaust smells quite strongly and the car vibrates when idling. I suspect that the EGR valve is not working properly. Have any of you ever had the same problem and can give me tips on how to fix it? What experiences have you had with garages that have solved this problem? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Mini One D (2007). I have a bit of experience with cars, as I've had to do a few things myself. When I experienced the same symptoms, I went straight to the garage. Especially with engine problems like this, I would really advise you not to do it yourself, as it often does more harm than good. In my case, the EGR valve was actually defective and jammed. After a replacement in the workshop for around 355 euros, the car ran smoothly again. For more details, however, I need the exact model name and mileage of your car. Hope that helps you for now!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My Mini now has 189765 km on the clock and according to the service book the last service was about 10,000 km ago. So I'm pretty sure it could be the EGR valve. 355 euros doesn't sound cheap, but if it solves the problem, it would be worth it. Do you know a good garage that you can recommend?

Hey, no problem - always happy to help! I would simply search for workshops in the search engines and look at the ratings. It's important to me that they explain exactly what's being done and why it's necessary. And the prices are also fair. Of course, it always depends on where you live. Unfortunately, I can't give you a specific recommendation, as every garage has its strengths and weaknesses. But 189765 km is a good performance for a Mini. In my case, replacing the EGR valve at a similarly high mileage was really helpful and stayed with me for several thousand kilometers. It looks like your Mini still has potential! Hope that helps you a bit.

Hey, totally helpful, thanks! I actually live near Munich, but I'll take your tips into account and have a look around my area. I'm guessing the prices won't be much different. I'm glad to hear that your exchange was successful and that you were able to drive a few more kilometers afterwards. I'm curious to see how many more kilometers I can get out of my Mini. Thanks again for your advice and words of encouragement!
