Mini Cooper rough running and stalling

My 2004 Mini Cooper is giving me grief! The engine's running rough, keeps stalling at idle, and the check engine light is on. Plus, it's jerking when I try to accelerate. I suspect it's a defective ignition coil since it feels like a misfire, and I think the likely cause is a defective cable or plug connection. Anyone experienced similar shenanigans?

Rough running and stalling, especially with the check engine light, does sound like a misfire. The ignition system on those Minis can be temperamental. Have you checked the coil pack for any visible damage or loose connections?

Given the symptoms and your initial inspection, the defective cable connection is indeed a probable cause. However, without proper vehicle diagnostics, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact issue. I would recommend taking it to a workshop for a thorough check.

Yeah, I had a quick look at the coil pack. Didn't see anything obvious. What exactly should I be looking for when checking the connections? Any specific signs of a defective cable connection?

Thanks a bunch for your help! Turns out it WAS a defective ignition coil, just like you suspected. The cable connection was a bit dodgy too. Got it sorted for 95€ at the workshop. Runs like a dream now! I will keep an eye on the ignition system from now on.
