Mini Cooper Overheating Issue

I have a 2007 Mini Cooper, diesel engine. Recently, the check engine light came on, and it seems like my car is overheating. A local workshop told me over the phone that this might be related to the active air flap having a fault with the electromechanism, but I am unsure how to proceed.

Okay, check engine light and overheating sounds concerning. With the check engine light, did you happen to get any specific error codes read? Also, is the car overheating only at certain times, like when you're driving slowly or in traffic? It's strange that it is overheating, better check the coolant level and the cooling fan operation, I am unsure what else could be the cause.

I did not get any error codes read. I am unsure how to do that. The overheating seems to happen more when I'm driving in town at lower speed. I'm not sure about the cooling fan. Do you know how I can check that?

From my experience, the active air flap being defective can definitely cause overheating, especially at lower speeds where there's less airflow. I'm not sure about how to check the fan, but the overheating could seriously damage your engine. I recommend taking it to a trusted workshop for a proper diagnosis and potential repair.

I took my Mini Cooper to a workshop, and they confirmed it was the active air flap electromechanism. Replacement cost me 590€. Hopefully that solves the overheating issue.
