Mini Cooper Air Conditioning Problem

I am writing to inquire about a perplexing issue with my 2008 Mini Cooper diesel. The air conditioning no longer cools, and the system does not switch on. A warning light is illuminated in the speedometer, and an error is stored in the error memory. Could a defective air conditioning control unit be the root cause?
