Mini Clubman transmission woes

Interesting! I haven't specifically checked the transmission oil level myself. I'm reasonably handy, but messing with the automatic transmission gives me the heebie-jeebies. Is checking the oil level something I could realistically do at home, or am I better off taking my diesel Clubman straight to a mechanic?

Affirmative. Given the symptoms and the error codes, low transmission oil is the prime suspect. While technically feasible to check the level yourself, it can be tricky without the right tools and knowledge of the specific procedure for your Clubman's automatic transmission. Incorrect fluid level can damage the transmission. My advice? Bite the bullet and get it to a reputable workshop. They can properly diagnose the issue, check for leaks, and ensure the correct oil level and sensor function. Don't risk further damage to your gearbox.

Thanks a million for the insight! Just got the Clubman back from the shop. Turns out you were spot on – the transmission oil temperature sensor was cactus because the oil level was critically low. They topped it up, replaced the sensor, and it's shifting like butter now. Cost me 365€ but honestly, worth every penny to have it running smoothly again!

Sounds eerily familiar. I had a similar drama with my Mini Countryman; same engine setup, though. The automatic transmission was acting up, throwing codes related to the transmission oil temperature sensor. First thing to check: the transmission oil level. Low oil can cause all sorts of havoc with the sensor readings and lead to those symptoms you described. Have you had the oil level checked recently?
