Mini Cabrio Fuel Consumption and Starting Issues

Alright so, I've got a bit of a head scratcher with my 2011 Mini Cabrio. It's got about 115251 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed the fuel consumption has gone up, and it's starting poorly sometimes. I had a friend check it out, and he thinks the throttle valve might be defective, maybe even the accelerator pedal module itself. Could that be the cause? Any else had this issue before? I am thinking of getting the throttle cleaning done soon. Any advice?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't tried cleaning the throttle valve yet, to be honest. Where exactly is it located, and is it something I could do myself without messing things up? Also, what should I be looking for when checking the air filter?

Yeah, cleaning might help temporarily, but if the accelerator pedal module is faulty, it's likely a permanent fix will be needed. I tried the cleaning route, but the problem came back after a while.
