Metal Shavings & Oil Light: Infiniti JX Engine Crisis

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Metal shavings in oil

Hey everyone, my 2012 Infiniti JX Hybrid is showing some concerning symptoms oil warning light is on and I've found metal shavings in the oil. There's also a warning light in the speedometer cluster. I suspect it might be related to engine oil pressure control, but I need some real-world input. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? If so, what was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any info on repair costs would be helpful too. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid (basically the successor to the JX). I also own a Q50, so I'm quite familiar with Infiniti's common issues. Last year, my QX60 had the same symptoms oil warning light and metal debris in the oil. Turned out the cable harness on the oil pressure control valve was completely soaked in oil and damaged. Got it fixed at my local Infiniti specialist for about 350€. The repair took about 4 hours, but it solved the issue completely. Could you share more details about your mileage and whether you notice any unusual engine noise? This would help determine if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Also, have you checked your oil level recently? Stay safe!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is at 190419 KM, and I just had my last service about two months ago. I haven't noticed any weird engine sounds yet, but I'll definitely check the oil level today. The oil pressure control valve issue you mentioned sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any performance changes before getting it fixed? I'm wondering if I should take it to the dealer or find a specialist like you did.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, with your mileage being around 190k km, it's definitely in the range where these issues can pop up. On my QX60, I actually did notice some minor performance problems before getting it fixed mainly some slight hesitation during acceleration and the engine feeling a bit rougher than usual, especially when cold. But nothing too dramatic. Honestly, I'd recommend going with a specialist over the dealer. When I took mine to the dealer first, they quoted me almost double what I ended up paying at my specialist. Plus, my mechanic actually showed me the damaged parts and explained everything, which the dealer doesn't always do. Just make sure you don't drive it too much until you get it checked out. These oil pressure issues can get serious pretty quick if ignored. My mechanic mentioned that if I had waited longer, it could've led to more extensive engine damage. By the way, after my repair, I started checking the oil level more frequently like every two weeks or so. Better safe than sorry, right? Let me know how it goes after you check the oil level!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! Just checked the oil level and it's actually a bit low, which probably isn't helping the situation. You've convinced me to skip the dealer and find a good specialist there's one about 20 minutes from my place with great reviews. I really appreciate the heads up about the potential for more serious damage too. I'll schedule an appointment first thing tomorrow and stick to minimal driving until then. The two-week oil check routine sounds like a smart move definitely going to start doing that myself. I'll update this thread once I get it fixed in case anyone else runs into similar issues. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out with this!
