Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right now. Definitely gonna take your advice and head to a certified Porsche center rather than risk it with another unusual shop. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the rebuild? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?
Hey again! Yeah, I totally get your concern. After seeing the Porsche specialist, they diagnosed and fixed the oil contamination issue, it was indeed those pesky rod bearings I mentioned. The whole thing set me back about 625€, which included parts and labor. I'm happy to report that since getting it fixed at the certified center, my Cayman S has been running like a dream! No more weird noises, no metal particles, and the engine temp's staying exactly where it should be. It's been over a year now, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. The key was definitely going to someone who really knows these engines inside and out. The techs at the Porsche center knew exactly what they were looking at and fixed it right the first time. Much better than rolling the dice with a general mechanic who might not be familiar with these specific engines. Hope this helps give you a better idea of what you might be looking at. Trust me, getting it sorted properly now will save you from bigger headaches down the road!
Thanks so much for all the details! I actually just got back from the Porsche center you recommended. You were spot on, it was the rod bearings causing all the trouble. Ended up costing me a bit more, around 800€, since they found some additional wear and tear, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The whole experience was way better than my last mechanic. These guys knew exactly what they were doing, gave me a detailed breakdown of the problems, and fixed everything properly. The engine's running smooth now, no more weird noises or metal bits in the oil. Temperature's back to normal too. Really glad I didn't try to cheap out or delay getting it fixed. You probably saved me from a complete engine failure! Thanks again for steering me in the right direction. It's such a relief to have my 991 back in proper shape. Guess I've found my new go-to mechanic! Take care!
Hey! I experienced something very similar with my 2014 Porsche Cayman S last year. The metal particles in oil and engine noise are serious warning signs, could be bearing failure. In my case, it turned out to be worn rod bearings that were starting to deteriorate. I took mine to an authorized Porsche service center when I noticed these symptoms, along with high engine temps. They had to partially rebuild the engine, and it was definitely a major repair job. These symptoms aren't something you want to ignore or delay getting checked out, as they can lead to catastrophic engine failure if left untreated. I'd strongly recommend finding a certified Porsche specialist or dealer service center rather than a general mechanic. The M96/M97 engines need specific expertise. You really don't want to risk further damage with someone who isn't familiar with these engines. Best of luck sorting this out.
