Metal in Oil: Outlander Warning Signs & Diagnosis

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2014 Outlander Diesel. Oil and warning lights are on in the dashboard, and I found metal particles in the oil during a recent check. I suspect it might be the oil pressure switch, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a somewhat similar issue with my 2012 Mitsubishi ASX diesel last year. I've got some experience working on cars, but I mainly trust my regular workshop for the serious stuff. When I saw metal particles in my oil, it turned out someone had used the wrong type of engine oil during a previous service (not at my regular workshop). Cost me 175€ to flush the system and replace with the correct oil spec. Luckily caught it before any major damage occurred! Before I can help more specifically with your case: Could you tell me when was your last oil change and what type of oil was used? Also, how many miles/kilometers has your Outlander done? These details would help figure out if you're facing the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My last service was actually just 2 months ago, and I'm currently at 143811 KM. Interesting that you mention the wrong oil type, I'll definitely check my service records to see what was used. Did you notice any unusual engine noise before finding the metal particles in your case? Really hoping it's just the oil pressure switch and not something more serious.

Hey again! Thanks for those details. Yeah, with my ASX, I actually did notice a slight ticking noise about a week before I spotted the metal particles, but I initially brushed it off (big mistake!). You know what's interesting, your mileage is pretty close to what mine was when I had the issue (I was around 140,000 KM). But from what you're describing, your situation sounds a bit different from what I experienced. In my case, I didn't have any warning lights until much later. I get why you're hoping it's just the oil pressure switch, that would definitely be the cheaper fix! But based on my experience, when you've got metal particles AND warning lights, it's worth getting it checked out ASAP. I learned the hard way that these symptoms can sometimes point to more serious issues. Have you noticed any change in engine performance lately? My ASX started feeling a bit sluggish before things went south. If you want my honest opinion, while it could be the pressure switch, I wouldn't rule out other possibilities just yet. Maybe get your mechanic to do a proper oil analysis? That's what finally gave me the full picture with my car. Keep me posted on what you find out! Really hoping it's something minor for you.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! Yeah, now that you mention it, I have noticed the engine feeling a bit sluggish lately, especially when accelerating. I didn't connect the dots until you brought it up. You're right, better safe than sorry. I've actually just booked it in for tomorrow morning at my regular workshop. They're going to do a full diagnostic check, including the oil analysis you suggested. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's definitely made me realize I shouldn't just assume it's the pressure switch. I'll update you once I know what's going on. Thanks again for taking the time to help out!
