Metal in Oil: Outlander's Warning Signs Spell Trouble

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone, I'm a bit concerned about my 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander (gas engine, 129,753 km). Recently noticed some metal particles in the oil and both the oil pressure light and a warning light on the dash have come on. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back there. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'm suspecting it might be an oil pressure control issue. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and maybe some recommendations for reliable mechanics who know their way around Outlanders. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 Mitsubishi ASX (gasoline). The oil pressure warning light came on, and I found metal particles during an oil check. Turned out the Cable harness on the oil pressure control valve was soaked in oil and deteriorating. Not a situation you want to ignore. Got it fixed at an authorized Mitsubishi service center since these symptoms can be pretty serious if left unchecked. In my case, they had to replace the entire oil pressure control valve assembly and the wiring harness. It was causing irregular oil pressure readings and could have led to engine damage if not addressed promptly. The repair took about a day and a half, they had to clean the area thoroughly before installing the new parts. This isn't something I'd recommend having done at a regular shop, as the diagnostic equipment needs to be specific to Mitsubishi to properly calibrate the new valve. Hope this helps with your decision. Don't wait too long on this one.

Hey, thanks so much for sharing that! This is exactly what I'm dealing with right now. Do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, curious if you've had any issues since getting it fixed? My local Mitsubishi dealer is quoting me pretty steep prices, so I'm trying to get an idea if that's normal.

Hey there! Glad to help follow up on this. After getting it fixed at the Mitsubishi service center, I haven't had a single issue with the oil pressure, it's been running perfectly smooth. The repair cost me 350€ for the Cable harness on oil pressure control valve, which was oily and defective. I know it might seem a bit pricey, but considering the potential damage it could cause to the engine if left unfixed, I'd say it was worth every penny. I get that dealer prices can seem steep, but with something as critical as oil pressure, I wouldn't risk going anywhere else. These guys have the right diagnostic tools and know exactly what they're dealing with. Plus, they usually warranty their work, which gives some peace of mind. If your quote is significantly higher than what I paid, might be worth checking with another authorized Mitsubishi dealer for comparison. Just make sure you don't put it off too long, you definitely don't want this developing into a bigger engine problem! Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Happy to share more details about my experience!

Thanks a lot for the detailed follow-up! After reading your response, I bit the bullet and took my Outlander to the Mitsubishi dealer yesterday. Turns out you were spot on, same issue with the oil pressure control valve. They charged me €420, a bit more than what you paid, but they also found and fixed a minor oil leak while they were at it. The whole thing took about a day and a half, just like your experience. Got my car back this morning and wow, what a difference! The engine's running much smoother now, and those warning lights are finally off. The mechanic showed me the old parts too, they were pretty worn out. Really glad I didn't try to save money by going to a cheaper shop. The peace of mind knowing it's properly fixed is worth the extra cost. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the right decision. Will definitely keep an eye on the oil pressure readings from now on, but feeling much better about the whole situation!
