Metal in Oil: Land Rover Defender Warning Signs Alert

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey car enthusiasts! Need some advice about my 2021 Land Rover Defender Hybrid (99k km). The oil warning light keeps coming on, and I've found metal particles in the oil. There's also a warning light flashing in the speedometer cluster. My previous mechanic suggested it might be the oil level sensor, but given my last disappointing experience with them, I'd rather get some second opinions. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and trusted mechanic recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport Hybrid last summer. The oil warning light situation you're describing rings a bell, I faced almost identical symptoms. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty oil level sensor cable connection. The metal particles you're finding are concerning though, that wasn't part of my problem. The connection had corroded and was sending incorrect signals to the system, triggering the warning lights. The fix for the sensor itself wasn't a major repair, just needed the cable connection cleaned and properly secured. The mechanic also mentioned these sensors commonly get corroded on Land Rovers. But those metal particles in your oil, that's something you should get checked ASAP. It could indicate internal engine wear. Just speaking from my experience, I'd get it looked at by a certified Land Rover specialist rather than a general mechanic. The hybrid system adds another layer of complexity to these diagnostics. Good luck with the repairs!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the sensor cable connection. My symptoms do sound pretty similar to what you dealt with. Did you remember roughly how much the sensor repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm particularly curious since I've got the hybrid model too.

Hey again! Glad I could help earlier! Yeah, I actually just got the sensor issue fixed last week, it cost me 165€ for the repair. They found exactly what I suspected: the oil level sensor cable connection was faulty and needed cleaning and proper securing. Since the repair, everything's been running perfectly smooth, no more annoying warning lights in the dashboard! Being a hybrid owner myself, I totally get your concerns. But I can tell you that once they fixed that sensor connection, my Discovery Sport has been working like a charm. The warning lights haven't come back at all, and the oil readings are now consistent and reliable. Just make sure you get those metal particles checked out though, that wasn't part of my issue, so better safe than sorry with that one. The sensor fix is pretty straightforward, but metal in the oil could mean something else needs attention. Let me know how it goes after you get it checked out! Always happy to help a fellow Land Rover hybrid owner.

Just wanted to update everyone on what happened with my Defender! I finally took it to a mechanic last week, and boy, am I glad I got it checked out. Turns out it was more than just the sensor issue, there was a minor problem with the oil pump that was causing those metal shavings. The mechanic fixed both the sensor connection and the pump. The whole thing cost me about 450€, which wasn't as bad as I feared. Been driving it for a few days now, and all the warning lights have disappeared. The engine's running smoother than before, and I haven't spotted any more metal particles in the oil. Thanks again for all the advice, especially about going to a specialist. You were right, these hybrid systems need someone who really knows what they're doing. Feels great to have this sorted out finally! Now I can stop worrying every time I get behind the wheel. Think I'll stick with this mechanic from now on, they really knew their stuff and explained everything clearly. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!
