Metal in Oil: Infiniti JX Engine Shows Warning Signs

Hey everyone, having some serious concerns with my 2013 Infiniti JX (110k km). The engine's making strange noises, running hot, and I'm finding metal particles in the oil. Oil warning light is also on. Previous mechanic suggested it might be the oil temp sensor, but given my last experience with them, I'd like to get some second opinions. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? If so, what was the actual problem and where did you get it fixed? Would really appreciate some guidance here. Thanks!

Hey there, Those symptoms sound really familiar. I had similar issues with my 2015 Infiniti QX60 last winter at 95k km. Initially thought it was minor, but the metal in oil and overheating were big red flags. I discovered my coolant was critically low, which was causing overheating and engine strain. There was actually a crack in the cylinder head that was letting coolant mix with the oil that explained the metal particles. Warning lights started popping up as the problem got worse. Had it checked at my local Infiniti dealer's service center. They found the head gasket was gone, and there was significant damage to the cylinder head. Definitely not something to ignore this type of issue can destroy your engine if left unchecked. They had to replace the cylinder head and head gasket, plus flush the entire cooling system. Car's been running perfectly since then, no more strange noises or overheating. Given your symptoms, I'd strongly suggest getting it to a certified Infiniti mechanic ASAP. This isn't something you want to wait on. Good luck with it.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This really helps as I'm dealing with the exact same symptoms. I'm planning to take it to the Infiniti dealer tomorrow morning. Just curious do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repairs? And has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After my last post, I actually took my QX60 to the mechanic and thankfully, it turned out to be way less serious than my initial experience. The Engine oil temperature sensor was indeed faulty (my mechanic nailed that diagnosis!) and they also found the coolant level was too low. Got both issues fixed, and it only set me back 52€ for the coolant top-up and check. Since getting those repairs done, my car's been running like a dream no more weird noises, no overheating, and those pesky warning lights are gone. Super relieved it wasn't the cylinder head issue I'd dealt with before! Just wanted to share this good news, as it shows that sometimes what seems scary at first might have a simple fix. Hope you've managed to get yours sorted too? Let me know how it went at the dealer! Catch you later!

Hey, thanks so much for the follow-up! Just got back from the Infiniti dealer, and you won't believe it my issue was pretty similar to your recent experience! The mechanic found a faulty oil temp sensor and low coolant level. What a relief it wasn't something more serious like a head gasket problem. Total bill came to around 450€ bit more expensive than yours since they also did a full diagnostic check and oil change while they were at it. But honestly, I'm just happy it wasn't thousands of dollars in repairs. Car's running smoothly now no more strange noises or warning lights. Guess I worried myself sick for nothing! Really appreciate everyone's input here, especially your detailed experiences. It definitely helped me make the right decision to get it checked out quickly. Thanks again for all the help!
