Mercedes GLE Diesel 2017: Black smoke, power loss and DPF regeneration problems

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Hello everyone, I drive a 2017 Mercedes GLE Diesel that has just under 200,000 km on it. I've noticed a few problems recently: Black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, engine warning light on, loss of power and a strong exhaust odor. In addition, the DPF regeneration doesn't seem to be working. I think that the efficiency of my particulate filter is probably too low. My last visit to the garage wasn't great, so I wanted to ask for advice this way. Has anyone had similar problems and can share their experience of getting it fixed at the mechanic? I would be grateful for any tips. Thanks and best regards

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2014 Mercedes GLS diesel. Just like yours, I noticed a loss of power, an active engine warning light and problems with the DPF regeneration. At the workshop, it turned out that my diesel particulate filter was defective due to high mileage. It was quite a job to replace the particulate filter. The entire exhaust had to be removed to get to the filter. It would have been risky to drive any longer without intervening, because it can lead to engine damage if the filter is completely blocked. So it's definitely a serious problem and you should get it looked at soon before it causes more serious damage. Hope this helps you. Best regards

Hello, thank you, that sounds like a lot of stress. It seems that I shouldn't put it off any longer. Do you happen to remember how much the whole thing cost you? Has anything else come up since then that I should keep an eye on? Best regards.

Moin, now that you mention it, it cost me a pretty big chunk of my wallet - but I couldn't avoid it. It cost €1550 in total, but since then the problem with the low efficiency of the particulate filter hasn't occurred at all. So replacing the diesel particulate filter due to high mileage was definitely the right decision. Since I've been to the mechanic, nothing else negative has come up, so you can probably expect similar costs. However, it's still better to intervene early rather than ignore the problem and potentially risk engine damage. Good luck with that! LG.

Moin, wow, that's quite a lot of money. But when I think how expensive engine damage can be, it's probably worth it. Many thanks for your experience and advice. I'll make an appointment with the mechanic tomorrow. Better sooner than later. Many thanks for your help, best regards

Well, what can I say, I have declared my vehicle as a gasoline engine and Carly keeps sending me the message: Diesel particulate filter closed. But the car doesn't have a diesel particulate filter. It is a gasoline engine. Instead, I am asked to purchase Smart Mechanik. To me, this sounds like a pure sales pitch. I'm even toying with the idea of doing away with Carly because they're trying to sell me the Smart Mechanic too pushily
