Mercedes GLA problems again and again the starter does not work

Dim or flickering lights

Weak battery when starting the engine

Car won't start

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Longer cold start time

Weird engine noise

Hello everyone, my Mercedes GLA Diesel (2019 model year) has recently started having problems: longer cold start times, sometimes won't start at all, strange engine noises, low battery when starting, flickering lights and a warning light in the speedometer. I think it could be the engine start system. Has anyone had similar experiences and knows how the garage fixed the problem? Thank you for any help!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Mercedes A-Class (2017 model year). I'm not a professional, but have some experience with cars. In my case, it was a fault in the vehicle electrics that affected other systems. At the workshop, they determined that the fault was a consequential fault in the electronics ("fault results from a consequential fault in the vehicle electrics"). The best thing about it: it cost me nothing - 0.0 euros. So that I can help you more precisely: What messages or warning lights does your car display exactly? Have you already read out the fault memory? Best wishes and good luck!

Hi, thanks for your reply! I'm not quite ready to read the fault memory yet. The warning light shows "engine control" and sometimes also "check vehicle battery charge". Had my last service about 10,000 km ago, currently at 189654 km mileage. Hope this helps. Do you have any tips on what I could check myself before visiting the workshop? Kind regards!

Hey, okay, good to know! The "engine control" warning light sounds like a problem with the electronics or sensors responsible for monitoring the engine. And if the battery warning light comes on, it could also be that the alternator is not working properly - so check the battery voltage. A multimeter can be helpful to test whether the battery has sufficient voltage (should be in the range of 12.4 - 12.7 volts when idle and approx. 14 volts when the engine is running). What you can check yourself: 1. **Battery cable**: Look at the connections on the battery - are they tight and clean? Corrosion can cause many problems here. 2 **Read out the fault memory**: As mentioned, this is really helpful. A diagnostic device can give you more precise information about which sensor or which part of the engine is causing problems. 3 **Check alternator**: If you have access to a multimeter, check to see if the alternator is charging properly. When the engine is running, the voltage should be around 14 volts. 4 **Check the fuses**: Also go through the fuses, maybe one has blown. If you have checked all this and still can't find a solution, then the only option is to go to the workshop. Sometimes there are really small things that you can easily fix before you have to have major repairs done. I hope this helps you for now! Best wishes and good luck!

Hello, thank you for the detailed tips! I will definitely check the battery and alternator and start the fault memory analysis. Let's see if I can narrow down the problem before it goes into the workshop. I'll get back to you when I know more! Best regards and thanks again!
