Mercedes GLA problems (2018) with the exhaust gas recirculation or EGR valve

Engine shuts off by itself

Unsteady engine

|

Loss of engine power

|

Check engine light on

|

Strong exhaust smell

Shaking while idling

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my 2013 Mercedes GLA Diesel and am hoping for your help. Symptoms: Check engine light on, engine shuts off by itself, loss of power, rough engine, strong exhaust smell and shuddering at idle. I suspect it is the EGR valve. Has anyone had similar experiences and how was the problem solved in the workshop? Thanks in advance! Best regards

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Mercedes CLA, built in 2015 (so two years older) and my garage actually found that the EGR valve was faulty or stuck. I have some experience with cars and therefore already knew that it could probably be the valve. The garage replaced the EGR valve and it cost me 355.0 euros. After that, the engine ran perfectly again, without any loss of power or exhaust smell. So that I can help you more precisely, it would be good to know how many kilometers your GLA already has on the clock and whether you have had similar problems in the past. Best wishes and good luck!

Hi, thanks for your reply! My GLA now has 176,543 km on the clock and the last time I had similar problems was just under a year ago, but they were solved by cleaning the EGR valve. It looks like I will actually have to have the valve replaced this time. Best regards

Hey, if your GLA already has 176,543 km on the clock and you had similar problems last year, it could really be that the EGR valve is now completely gone. The EGR valve is often the culprit for these symptoms (check engine light, engine shutdown, loss of power, unsteady engine, strong exhaust odor and shuddering at idle). Especially if a previous cleaning has only solved the problem temporarily, replacement is probably necessary. My tip: Have the EGR valve replaced, as was the case with my CLA. The 355 euros for the replacement is no bargain, but after that my CLA ran perfectly again and I no longer had any of these problems. So it's definitely worth the investment, especially when you consider that you'll have peace of mind again. Perhaps you can also ask your garage if there is any way of fitting a higher quality valve that might last longer. However, it is usually sufficient to use the standard part and check regularly to see if similar symptoms reappear. Hope this helps you and hopefully your GLA will soon be back to its best! Best wishes and all the best!

Hi, thanks for all the tips and information! Replacing the EGR valve really does seem to be the best solution. I will tackle this as soon as possible and also ask again if they can fit a higher quality valve. The 355 euros are a lot, but if my GLA runs smoothly again afterwards, it's definitely worth it. Thanks again and best regards!

Hello, may I ask where/who carries out the replacement of the AgR valves in southern Germany (Singen) for the price of +/- 355. I have received offers of well over 1'000. Many thanks.
