Mercedes CLA power loss and the engine starts badly

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Longer cold start time

Loss of engine power

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Mercedes CLA (built in 2016, gasoline engine). Symptoms: Black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, engine light on, longer time at cold start, loss of power, rough engine running, jerking when accelerating, engine won't start, engine stalls at idle, engine running rough at idle. I suspect that a defective injection valve could be the cause. Has anyone had similar experiences and how did your garage solve the problem? I am grateful for any tips!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Mercedes A-Class (built in 2014, also a petrol engine). I had almost the same symptoms: black smoke, loss of power and rough engine running. I have a bit of experience with cars, but would say rather "low experience". At my garage they found out at the time that it was a plug/cable connection problem. The repair cost me 155 euros and afterwards the car ran like new again. If you give me some more detailed information about your vehicle (e.g. engine code or exact error codes), I may be able to help you better. LG

Hey, my CLA currently has 187654 km on the clock, and the last service was about 5000 km ago. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact fault codes to hand at the moment, but I could have them read out if necessary. Thanks for the tip about the cable connection, that could well be a possible cause. LG

Hey, okay, that helps a bit. Given the mileage of your CLA and the symptoms you describe, it may well be that the injectors are no longer working properly. I recently had further problems with my petrol Mercedes (again: A-Class, built in 2014), which turned out to be defective injectors. If your garage has already checked the cable connection, the next logical step would actually be to take a closer look at the injectors. In my case, replacing the defective valves cost around 600 euros, but was absolutely necessary to get the engine back into a reliable condition. It might also be helpful to read the fault codes directly with an OBD-II scanner. The codes could give us a more specific indication of whether the injectors are really affected or whether there are other problems causing the symptoms. If you have the error codes, post them here, perhaps we can then get to the bottom of the causes even better. Good luck and keep us up to date! LG

Hey, thanks for your detailed reply and the helpful tips! I will definitely have the cable connections and the injection valves checked by my garage. The 600 euros to replace the injectors is not cheap, but if it is the cause of all the problems, it would probably be worth it. I'll have the error codes read out and post them here as soon as I have them. Maybe that really will give more clarity. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted! LG
