Hi guys, how are you? I have a Mercedes CLA Class from 2013 with a gasoline engine and almost 140,000 km on the clock. Somehow it's not running smoothly at the moment. The check engine light is on, the engine just cuts out, runs unevenly and smells strongly of exhaust fumes, and it jerks a bit when stationary. Hey, I had the same problem with my 2016 Mercedes C-Class. Had the same symptoms as you: engine just stopped and jerked, strong exhaust odor, check engine light was on... Exactly the same, man. Turned out my EGR valve was faulty. From what I understand, the valve was causing exhaust gases to be fed back into the engine and causing all these problems. So yes, it's quite possible for an EGR valve to break at just under 140,000 km. Really annoying, but nothing life-threatening. The mechanic said it's a common repair, but it takes some time because the valve is deep in the engine. I left my Benz in the workshop for a few days and then everything worked great again. Hey, yes, I can still remember that. The repair of the EGR valve cost about €355 at the time. The workshop fixed the malfunction in the EGR valve and since then everything has been running perfectly, no further problems.
