Mercedes CLA 2013: Unsteady running and possible EGR valve fault
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Mercedes CLA is experiencing unsteady running, engine cutouts, uneven performance, a strong exhaust smell, and a check engine light. These symptoms suggest a possible fault in the EGR valve, which could be causing exhaust gases to improperly circulate back into the engine. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the faulty EGR valve, a common repair that typically restores smooth operation.

Hey, thanks for the great info! That sounds exactly like my problem. Quick question for you: Can you remember how much you left with the mechanic for the EGR valve repair? And have you had any other issues since then? Would like to know if I need to be prepared for more. Thank you!

Hey, yes, I can still remember that. The repair of the EGR valve cost about €355 at the time. The workshop fixed the malfunction in the EGR valve and since then everything has been running perfectly, no further problems. So don't worry, after the repair your Benz should run like clockwork again. Good luck!

Brilliant, thanks for your help, that really puts my mind at rest! 355 sounds fair for the repair. I'm glad to hear you haven't had any further problems since. I'll take my car to the mechanic tomorrow morning and hope it's just the EGR valve. Thanks again for the advice. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Have a good evening!

Hey, I had the same problem with my 2016 Mercedes C-Class. Had the same symptoms as you: engine just stopped and jerked, strong exhaust odor, check engine light was on... Exactly the same, man. Turned out my EGR valve was faulty. From what I understand, the valve was causing exhaust gases to be fed back into the engine and causing all these problems. So yes, it's quite possible for an EGR valve to break at just under 140,000 km. Really annoying, but nothing life-threatening. The mechanic said it's a common repair, but it takes some time because the valve is deep in the engine. I left my Benz in the workshop for a few days and then everything worked great again. So check it out, maybe you have the same problem. Good luck with that!
