Mercedes CLA 2013: Unsteady running and possible EGR valve fault

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, how are you? I have a Mercedes CLA Class from 2013 with a gasoline engine and almost 140,000 km on the clock. Somehow it's not running smoothly at the moment. The check engine light is on, the engine just cuts out, runs unevenly and smells strongly of exhaust fumes, and it jerks a bit when stationary. I'm wondering whether the problem could be a functional fault in the EGR valve. Have any of you ever experienced something like this or taken your car to a mechanic after noticing similar symptoms? I had a really bad experience recently. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I had the same problem with my 2016 Mercedes C-Class. Had the same symptoms as you: engine just stopped and jerked, strong exhaust odor, check engine light was on... Exactly the same, man. Turned out my EGR valve was faulty. From what I understand, the valve was causing exhaust gases to be fed back into the engine and causing all these problems. So yes, it's quite possible for an EGR valve to break at just under 140,000 km. Really annoying, but nothing life-threatening. The mechanic said it's a common repair, but it takes some time because the valve is deep in the engine. I left my Benz in the workshop for a few days and then everything worked great again. So check it out, maybe you have the same problem. Good luck with that!

Hey, thanks for the great info! That sounds exactly like my problem. Quick question for you: Can you remember how much you left with the mechanic for the EGR valve repair? And have you had any other issues since then? Would like to know if I need to be prepared for more. Thank you!

Hey, yes, I can still remember that. The repair of the EGR valve cost about €355 at the time. The workshop fixed the malfunction in the EGR valve and since then everything has been running perfectly, no further problems. So don't worry, after the repair your Benz should run like clockwork again. Good luck!

Brilliant, thanks for your help, that really puts my mind at rest! 355 sounds fair for the repair. I'm glad to hear you haven't had any further problems since. I'll take my car to the mechanic tomorrow morning and hope it's just the EGR valve. Thanks again for the advice. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Have a good evening!
