Mazda Spiano '03 Experiencing Black Smoke, Power Loss, and Poor Fuel Economy: Potential Lambda Sensor Heater Issue?

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Hey everyone, I've got an '03 Mazda Spiano running on gas that's been acting up lately. Black smoke is belching out the exhaust when I put the pedal down, my engine light's perpetually on, and I've noticed a significant drop in power and pretty bad fuel economy. The engine isn't running evenly, and there's a jerky feeling every time I try to accelerate. I'm speculating that the issue could be with the lambda sensor heater. Has anyone come across this problem with their Spiano before? Any insights or experience on the matter would be super helpful, especially on how you resolved it at the repair shop. Cheers!

Hey! I definitely feel your pain. Got a '01 Mazda Demio and had a similar issue couple years back. I'm not exactly a car whizz, got some experience but not too much, mostly know my way around the basics. Turned out it was the Lambda sensor heater causing the ruckus - very similar to what you're describing. Had to roll up to the workshop, where I had it replaced. That set me back by about 375€ to sort out, which in my books was better than a new car! Quick check though, when'd you last get your Spiano serviced? Might help in understanding more about your situation. And do me a favor, check the other sensors too, alright? Just in case it's something else acting up. Keep us posted!

Hey! Appreciate the response and advice! I last had the ol' Spiano serviced at 150,000 KM, so it's relatively fresh off the stands, you know? Been about 4,548 KM since then. I did consider the other sensors, don't worry. So far, it all points back to the lambda sensor heater. That price does sting a bit, though. But then again, better than a new car payment, aye? I'll take her to the shop soon and see what they say. Will definitely keep everyone posted on the progress. Fingers crossed, it's nothing worse! Cheers!

Howdy again! Just reading your situation makes me feel like it was my Demio messing up again. She didn't give me a breather when she had issues. Remembered that it felt like my engine was sputtering to its death every time I stepped on the gas! All confirmed signs do point towards that lambda sensor heater, like you said. Hey, don't sweat the cost too much though, your Spiano’s gonna run smooth as silk post fixing, worth every penny! Also, one thing I learnt from my experience, regular check-ups. That 5,000 KM or so can be longer than you think for a car. Good to hear you’ll bring her to the shop soon, probably they've got a good read on the issue. Stay optimistic! Worst case scenario, we Spiano/Demio owners gotta stick together, right? We've seen worse days! Keep us updated and best of luck with the repair! Cheers!

Hey hey! Your words do provide some solace! I absolutely love my Spiano, and it's dead painful to see it sputter and stutter the way it is right now. But, aye, your advice is pretty sound. I'm hoping the poor lady will get back to her top form post the fixing. Just holding onto the optimism, you know? Your positive outlook is somewhat contagious, haha. Your point on regular check-ups is noted. I'll definitely be more vigilant in the future - lesson learned the hard way, I suppose. And aye, sticking together as Spiano/Demio owners sounds like a plan! Thanks again for the support. Will let you guys know how it all pans out. Wish me luck! Cheers!
