Mazda MPV '04 Engine Troubles: Power Loss, Noise, and Metal Shavings in Oil

Hey everyone, I'm having some pretty serious issues with my '04 Mazda MPV, Gasoline engine, with around 299,147 KM on the odometer. The engine light's on, it's been cutting out, losing power, acting up, and refusing to start. Also, it's been making some weird noises and I even found metal shavings in the oil! I'm starting to think the problem might be that the position of the crankshaft to camshaft is incorrect, but I'd love to hear your thoughts? Have any of you experienced something similar and what was your adventure like at your mechanic's? Really appreciate any insight, still shaken up from a lousy experience with my previous mechanic.
