Mazda CX5 2017 Experiences Weak Battery and Flickering Lights Issues

Dim or flickering lights

Weak battery when starting the engine

Hey! I'm driving a 2017 Mazda CX5 with a gasoline engine and about 119,710 KM on the clock. I've been having some issues that I suspect are related to a faulty additional battery. When I start the engine, I notice that the battery is quite weak. Also, the lights tend to dim or flicker at times. Had a bit of a rough ride with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to just dive back in without some additional insights. Anyone else experienced something similar? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was the overall experience? Appreciate the shared wisdom!

Hey there. I can definitely sympathize with your situation. Had a somewhat similar issue with my own vehicle, a 2014 Mazda CX9, not too long ago. Started noticing the same symptoms you're describing - weak start-ups, flickering lights, you name it. Took it over to my mechanic and, sure enough, he confirmed it was a battery-related issue. There's this thing called a parasitic drain where your battery power could be used up even when the car isn't running. Basically, something was draining my battery when it shouldn't have been. Long story short, my mechanic traced the problem back to the on-board computer. There was a glitch that was causing the system to stay on and suck dry the battery. Once the computer was rebooted and the faulty software updated, things started working smooth as butter again. It was definitely a serious issue but, truth be told, I was glad it was something that could be sorted without having to replace any major parts, like the battery or alternator. Here's some advice the symptoms you're describing could be a number of things, but don't rule out uncommon culprits like a faulty on-board computer. Best to get a trusted mechanic to take a look and diagnose properly. Good luck!

Hey there, just echoing what has been shared. I had a twin situation with my 2016 Mazda CX5. Dim lights, weak start-ups, the whole lot. It turned out to be an issue with the on-board computer, just like's experience. Once it was reset and the software updated, I was good to go. Quick question, if you don't mind my asking, what was the damage to your pocket after the mechanic worked their magic on your car? Also, any other problems you've experienced since you got it sorted? Sharing is caring, after all. Cheers!

Hey, yeah, car troubles can be a pain, right? So I bit the bullet and took my CX9 to the mechanic to deal with that annoying battery drain, and yep, you guessed right, there was definitely a cost involved. Ended up paying 290.00 € to fix the additional battery issue. I know, it ain't cheap, but what's a guy to do, eh? You gotta keep your ride working properly. On the bright side, the fix did the job, and I can tell you, since the visit to the mechanic, my car has been running as reliable as ever, no more battery problems. So, I'd say it was worth every penny! As for any other issues, it's been all clear since then. The fix sorted out the flickering lights and weak start-ups. Here's to hoping it stays that way! But you know cars - they always keep you on your toes. Anyways, hope that helps with your predicament! Good luck with your CX5 and here's hoping for a simple, straightforward solution when you bring her in. Cheers!

Thanks so much for all the insights! It's comforting to know I'm not alone with this kind of issue. Your experiences have definitely given me a lot to consider before heading back to the garage, and I appreciate the advice to not overlook potential unlikely issues with the on-board computer. Well, my fingers are crossed that the repair won't leave too deep of a dent in my pocket, but like you said,, keeping the ride in top shape is what counts. Let's see what my mechanic discovers. I'll make sure to update you all once I get the problem sorted, might end up contributing to the pool of knowledge here! Cheers for the shared wisdom, really helped me out. So, off to make a garage appointment now. Fingers crossed!
