Mazda Bongo 2004: Oil Light Warning and Metal Shavings Detection

Oil light on

Metal shavings in oil

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey guys, need a bit of advice. I've got a 2004 Mazda Bongo with 177,826 KM on it, and recently my oil light flicked on and I found metal shavings in the oil which I think is causing the warning light on my speedo. My gut tells me I've got too low engine oil pressure, but after a previous bad experience, I'm hesitant to rush down to my mechanic's. Has anyone had a similar problem and if so, what was your experience at the mechanic's? Cheers!

Hey! I've had a rough ride with something similar in the past, can't give you a medic-grade analysis but I can share my two cents. I've got a 2001 Mazda MPV, so pretty close cousin to your Bongo. Hit a similar mileage when that pesky oil light would flicker on & off, didn't have metal shavings but noticed the engine acting a bit sketchy. Turned out I accidentally used the wrong engine oil during my last DIY change, causing low pressure, weird noises, and erratic behavior. It was a serious enough issue that it could have seized up my engine if left unchecked. My mechanic was straight-up about it, said it wasn't the end of the world, but definitely not something to dust off either. To fix it, the lad completely drained out the incorrect oil, replaced it with the right stuff, gave it a solid flush, changed the oil filter for good measure, and then closely monitored the engine. Running smoother than a velvet glove now. Don't wanna scare ya, but don't dilly-dally either. Get your Bongo to a trustworthy mechanic. They'll sort it right out. Safe journeys!

Hey there Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds like a right rollercoaster ride! I'd totally ignored the possibility of having used the wrong engine oil. It could be a lead I can take to my mechanic, hopefully without the engine seizing bit. Glad to hear your MPV is doing great. Just a bit curious, can you remember how much you shelled out to get it all sorted? And since then, has anything else cropped up related to the issue? Don't want to get blindsided later on, y'know. Stay safe, cheers!

Hey again, Yep, it was certainly a rollercoaster alright, one that I don't plan on riding again soon. To get my engine sorted out, it cost me about 175 quid. Seems like a bit of a pinch but considering it could have done a real number on my engine, I reckon it was money well spent. Since the mechanic took care of the wrong engine oil and the low pressure thing, she's been working like a dream, no major issues. Fingers crossed, you won't get any nasty surprises later on either. Remember better safe than sorry, so don't put it off. All the best with your Bongo, hope it gets back on the road soon! Smooth rides!

Hey there, Thank you for sharing all the details. Your advice has surely taken off some of the stress. 175 quid seems like a steal for avoiding a potential engine disaster. I really appreciate your help. I'll contact my mechanic first thing tomorrow and see how to proceed. Hopefully the love we share for our Mazdas will get my Bongo back on the road without any major setbacks. Will keep you posted! Cheers! Safe travels! Thanks again for your guidance!
