Mazda 5 Diesel 2014 Overheating and Coolant Issues: Seeking Solutions & Reliable Mechanics

Overheating

|

Coolant level low

Hey gearheads, got a 2014 Mazda 5 Diesel with a bit over 169k on the clock showing signs of trouble. She's running a bit on the hot side and can't seem to hold her coolant. I'm thinking it might be something going on with the radiator shutter. Last experience with a mechanic wasn't the best so really hesitant to head back without some feedback from all y'all. Anyone faced a similar coolant or overheating drama with their ride? Any advice on what worked for you? Looking for some real talk and honestly good mechanics out there. Cheers!

Hey! I drive a 2011 Mazda 3 Hatchback and had dealing with somewhat similar snag a while ago. Turned out it was not the radiator itself but the wiring harness to the sensor was massively corroded. I know you're thinking radiator shutter, and it might be, but in my case, the culprit was this nasty corrosion. In my garage trip, they needed to replace the entire wiring harness and the sensor too. Sure, it wasn't a quick patch-up, and it can sound serious because essentially, it's your car's way of communicating with the coolant system. But hey, once they sorted it out, it was smooth sailing. So, just given your symptoms, I'd recommend asking your mechanic to have a good look at the wiring harness over giving the runaround on the radiator. Hope this helps and your Mazda runs smooth soon. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the feedback! It's good to hear from someone who had a similar issue. I hadn't even thought about the wiring harness, to be honest. I'll definitely have that looked at. By the way, do you remember how much it cost you to get your wiring harness and sensor replaced? Also, has anything else popped up related to that since the repair? Just wanting to gauge what I might be in for. Thanks again!

Hey, no worries, glad I could give you a new perspective. I know how nerve-wracking it can be when these issues pop up! Honestly, the repair didn't break the bank as much as expected. It set me back by 155.00 €, which included the cost of a new wiring harness and the sensor replacement. A fair price to nullify that headache, don't you think? About your other question, I’m pleased to report that since the mechanic got his mitts on it - aside from the normal wear and tear – I haven’t really had any major headaches, especially nothing related to that pesky wiring harness or sensor. And yes, the functional limitation of the radiator shutter was addressed too! So, it seems it was a one-off situation for me. I reckon as long as you have a good mechanic and keep on top of the regular maintenance, you should be good to go. Good luck with your Mazda and I hope it'll be running as smooth as mine soon. Keep your fingers crossed! Cheers!

I appreciate that insight! You've given me a bit of relief, I was a little on edge given my previous experiences. 155.00 € doesn't seem so steep considering the peace of mind it brings, eh? And, it's a relief to know that once the issue was fixed for you, it was indeed fixed for good. Me fingers are crossed that it'll be the same case with my Mazda. I'll make sure to find a reliable mechanic this go round. Thanks again for the advice, it really eased my mind. Driving a car with temperature trouble is no joyride but hey, let's hope for smooth travels soon! Cheers and take care!
