Mass air flow sensor error on 2021 Renault Captur diesel: experience and tips wanted

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey guys, I need your help. My 2021 Renault Captur Diesel with 129604 km seems to have problems with the mass air flow sensor. The symptoms are severe: black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, the engine switches off by itself, loss of power, engine running out of round, jerking when accelerating, poor fuel consumption, stuttering at idle and shuddering at idle. Have any of you had similar problems and what did the mechanic do about it? I would appreciate any tips and experience reports. After a bad experience at the garage the other day, I'd like to know what to look out for. Thanks in advance!

Hey buddy, had similar issues with my 2018 Renault Megane Diesel. It was actually the wiring harness (damage to the wiring harness) that was causing my car to act so crazy. The mechanic had to replace the entire wiring harness. The mass air flow sensor was partially damaged and therefore could no longer provide correct readings, which led to the problems you described. To be honest, it wasn't an easy job, the cables are spread all over the engine and it took a while to replace them all. But after that everything was fine again. It seems that with these models the cables can often be a problem. So yes, it was a serious thing. Hope that helps you. Don't worry, everything should be back to normal after the repair. All the best!

Hey, thanks for the quick feedback. That sounds like quite a job with the wiring harness. Even though it was probably a lot of work, I'm glad to hear that everything was back to normal afterwards. Do you still have any idea what you had to pay for the whole thing? And did something similar happen again afterwards, or has the repair held up until now? I'd be really interested to know. Cheers!

Moin, no problem, you're welcome. Yes, it really was a lot of work. But since the procedure, everything has gone really smoothly with my Renault. The fault with the mass air flow sensor was rectified and there have been no further problems since. As for the cost, I had to fork out around 95 euros because the damage to the wiring harness had to be repaired. But can I say? It was worth it! Cars are just one of those things...sometimes you just have to invest a bit to get them purring like a kitten again. Hope this helps you!

Thank you, this information is really helpful! Sure, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and invest a bit more money to get your car back on track. An annoying breakdown like that can really ruin your day. But if everything works again after the repair, it's probably worth it. You've really encouraged me, thank you! Cheers!
