Macan Diesel Problems: Cold Start & Power Loss Mystery

Poor fuel economy

Longer cold start time

Jerking on acceleration

Car won't start

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my 2016 Porsche Macan Diesel. The engine's acting up with multiple symptoms, hard to start when cold, losing power, jerking during acceleration, and fuel consumption has gone through the roof. Check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be related to the smooth running control system. Has anyone experienced similar issues? If so, what was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and costs. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 Porsche Cayenne Diesel last year. I have some experience with cars, but nothing too advanced. My symptoms were pretty much identical to yours, especially that hard cold start and power loss. Turned out my intake channels were heavily contaminated, restricting proper airflow. Took it to my regular Porsche specialist (not the main dealer, saved some money there!). The cleaning job cost me 425€, but the car's been running like new since. What's your mileage and service history? Also, have you had any diagnostic codes read? This info would help confirm if we're dealing with the same issue. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more details.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is 47978 KM and I've kept up with all scheduled services. Just had my last service about two months ago. I haven't gotten the diagnostic codes read yet, but I'm planning to take it to a specialist tomorrow. The symptoms you described sound spot on though, especially that cold start issue. It's a bit reassuring to hear it might just be a cleaning job rather than something major. Did you notice any warning lights before getting it fixed? And did your mechanic mention how often this kind of cleaning should be done preventively? Thanks again for the help!

Hey again! Happy to help more with this. Yeah, my Cayenne had the check engine light on too before I got it fixed. Actually, this seems to be a pretty common issue with our Porsche diesels. I forgot to mention earlier, but my car had around 52,000 KM when this happened, pretty close to where you're at now. The mechanic actually told me this is something that should be looked at every 40-45K kilometers, especially if you do a lot of city driving like I do. The intake channels can get gunked up faster in stop-and-go traffic. Since that first cleaning, I've made it part of my maintenance routine, better safe than sorry, right? Just a heads up, when I got mine fixed, the mechanic showed me all the gunk they cleaned out. It was pretty shocking how much buildup there was! Make sure to ask your specialist to show you if they find anything similar. It really helped me understand why the car was acting up. Let me know what your mechanic says tomorrow. I'm curious if it turns out to be the same issue. If it is, at least it's a straightforward fix and not too expensive compared to some other Porsche repairs!

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! It's really helpful, especially knowing about the maintenance interval suggestion. I do quite a bit of city driving too, so that explains a lot. I'll definitely ask the mechanic to show me the buildup if they find any, it would be interesting to see what's causing all these problems. It's actually quite relieving to hear this is a common issue with a straightforward fix. I was worried it might be something way more serious (and expensive!). Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll ask about setting up a regular cleaning schedule too, like you suggested. Better to prevent issues than deal with them after they pop up. Thanks again for all your help!
