Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey all! Having some major transmission trouble with my 2016 BMW M3 (72,843 km, gas engine) and looking for advice. My check engine and transmission lights are on, engine's running in limp mode, and there's some nasty grinding when shifting. Also getting terrible acceleration and slipping gears. The error scan points to the torque converter lock-up clutch. Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was your repair experience and cost like? Really appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Hey there! I went through something very similar with my 2013 BMW M4 last year. The symptoms were identical, transmission warning light, limp mode, and that awful grinding noise during shifts. After multiple scans, it was confirmed to be a faulty torque converter. In my case, it was more than just a minor repair. The garage had to remove the entire transmission to replace the torque converter, and they discovered the converter's lock-up clutch had completely failed. The whole job took about 4-5 days to complete. This isn't something you want to postpone, I learned that continuing to drive with these symptoms can cause more extensive damage to the transmission. The torque converter is a critical component that transfers power from the engine to the transmission, so when it fails, it needs immediate attention. I'd suggest getting it checked ASAP by a transmission specialist who's familiar with BMW powertrains. A general mechanic might not have the specific expertise needed for this repair. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Almost identical to what I'm dealing with now. The symptoms lined up exactly, and it's somewhat reassuring to hear I'm not alone with this issue. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Just trying to get an idea of what I'm potentially looking at cost-wise and whether it's a lasting solution. My BMW's been sitting in the driveway for a few days now, didn't want to risk making things worse. Definitely going to look for a specialist as you suggested.

Hey again! Absolutely happy to update you! Since getting my M4 fixed, it's been running like a dream, honestly, feels like a completely different car. The grinding and slipping are totally gone, and the transmission shifts are buttery smooth now. The total bill came to 2120 € for fixing the automatic transmission torque converter. Yeah, it wasn't cheap, but considering the complexity of taking apart and rebuilding the transmission, plus the specialized parts, I'd say it was worth every penny. Sometimes you've just got to bite the bullet with these high-performance cars, right? I've put about 15,000 km on it since the repair with zero issues. The specialist did a thorough job, and I'm really glad I didn't try to cut corners or keep driving it when the problem first showed up. That could've made things way worse (and more expensive!). Smart move keeping yours parked until you can get it looked at. These transmissions are too expensive to risk causing more damage. Let me know how it goes when you get it fixed, always interested to hear if others have similar experiences with their BMWs!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! Just got back from the mechanic today and wanted to share my experience. You were spot on about everything! Took it to a BMW specialist who diagnosed the exact same issue, faulty torque converter. Bill came to 2350 €, slightly more than yours but I also had them do a transmission fluid flush while they were at it. The whole repair took about a week, but wow, what a difference! Test drove it yesterday and the transmission shifts are incredibly smooth now. No more grinding, no more warning lights, and the acceleration is back to normal. Feels like I'm driving a brand new car! Really glad I didn't try to save money by going to a general mechanic. The specialist knew exactly what they were dealing with and showed me all the worn-out parts they replaced. Definitely learned my lesson about addressing these issues quickly before they get worse. Thanks again for your help, having your experience as a reference really helped me make the right decision!
