M2 Electrical Gremlins: Purple Xenons & Dashboard Mayhem

Fault stored

Hey everyone, need some advice on my 2018 M2. Having multiple electrical issues, error warnings in the dash, lighting system fault, and the xenon lights are turning purple. Pretty sure it's related to a faulty turn signal, but want to know if anyone's dealt with similar symptoms. What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Anyone had the same cluster of issues?

Hey there! I had pretty similar issues with my 2016 M4 last year. I'm fairly experienced with basic car maintenance, but electrical gremlins are definitely not my forte. My car was throwing unusual warning lights, and the headlights were acting weird too. Took it to my regular workshop, and it turned out to be a bad connection in one of the main wiring harnesses near the headlight assembly. The plug had some corrosion and wasn't making proper contact. They cleaned the connections, replaced a damaged cable, and everything went back to normal. Cost me about 95 Euro for the fix. Could definitely be related to your turn signal issue, but better safe than sorry with electrical problems. Can you share more details about when these issues started happening? Also, have you noticed any pattern, like do the problems get worse when it's wet or when you hit bumps?

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My M2 has 147673 KM on the clock and was just serviced last month. That wiring harness issue you mentioned sounds eerily similar to what I'm experiencing. Actually, I've noticed the warnings tend to pop up more frequently when driving over rough patches, which makes me think loose connections could definitely be the culprit. Haven't noticed any correlation with wet weather though. I'll get it checked out at the workshop, hoping it's just a connection issue like yours and nothing more serious. Did your mechanic have to order any special parts, or was it mainly just cleaning and reconnecting?

Hey again! Yeah, in my case with the M4, it was mostly a maintenance job, no major parts needed. The mechanic only had to replace one small section of the wiring that had gotten damaged from the corrosion, but it wasn't anything fancy or BMW-specific. The fact that your issues get worse over bumps definitely rings a bell, that's exactly how mine acted up too. The workshop had the wiring fixed within a day since they didn't need to wait for parts. They just cleaned up the connections, applied some dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion, and secured everything properly. The purple xenon lights were actually a good warning sign, saved me from a complete headlight failure down the road. Since your car has similar mileage to what mine had when this happened (mine was around 145000 km), I'd bet you're dealing with the same thing. Just make sure they check all the connections thoroughly, my mechanic found a couple other spots that were starting to corrode while they were in there. Better to fix it all at once rather than having to go back in a few months later! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Pretty sure you'll be back on the road without those annoying warnings in no time.

Thanks for all the additional details! That's really reassuring to hear it was a relatively straightforward fix for you. I've booked my M2 in for next week, called the workshop and mentioned the possible wiring harness issue, and they seemed pretty familiar with it. Really hoping it'll be similar to your situation with just some cleaning and basic repairs needed. The fact that yours was sorted in a day is great news too, I was worried I'd be without the car for ages! Good call about getting them to check all the connections while they're at it. I'll definitely ask them to do a thorough inspection of the whole system. The car's been absolutely brilliant otherwise, so it makes sense to take care of all potential issues now rather than dealing with them one by one. I'll update you once it's sorted. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's helped put my mind at ease about the whole situation!

I keep getting an intermittent code for left “daytime running light, left, faulty” but it usually clears itself on the next start for a while and then returns.

Start by checking the bulb and its connection for any signs of corrosion or looseness. Sometimes, simply reseating the bulb can resolve intermittent issues. If the problem persists, it might be worth inspecting the wiring for any damage or wear. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!

This fault appears to me, but the car runs normally, I've looked at possible fuses, the headlight works perfectly, what could it be?

Check the bulb socket and wiring for any signs of corrosion or damage. Sometimes, even if the headlight works, a poor connection can trigger a fault code. If everything looks fine, consider swapping the bulb with the one from the other side to see if the issue follows the bulb. If the problem persists, it might be worth having a mechanic inspect the system. Let me know if you need further assistance!
