Looking for workshop recommendation: Problems with low pressure fuel system in Golf Diesel 2004

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Engine shuts off by itself

Strong exhaust smell

Unsteady engine

Hello, I have a problem with my Golf (diesel, built in 2004). It has been behaving strangely recently - black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, the engine just stalls, loss of power, rough engine running, jerking when accelerating, high fuel consumption, strong exhaust odor and occasional stalling at idle are some of the symptoms. I suspect it is related to the low pressure fuel system. Does anyone have experience with such problems and can help? How did you get to grips with it? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Golf (diesel, 2002 model), just like yours. I would describe myself as someone with some experience with cars, not a professional, but I know my way around a bit. As you suspected, it may be the low pressure fuel system. In my case, the fuel filter was clogged. I went to my regular garage. They replaced the filter and the car ran perfectly afterwards. The repair cost me 205 euros at the time. Of course, this could vary depending on the garage and region. If you give me more detailed information about your car, I may be able to offer you further details that could help. I hope this helps you! All the best.

Moin, thanks for sharing your insight. My Golf now has 283200 km on the clock and the last service was about 6 months ago. I really hope it's the filter and not the fuel pumps of the low pressure system. Unfortunately, replacing them costs a small fortune... Thanks again for the information, it has helped me. I'll just make an appointment at my garage and hope for the best. Hopefully the costs will be kept within reasonable limits. Greetings.

Hey, you're right, repairing or replacing components, such as the fuel pump in the low-pressure system, can be quite expensive. But it's definitely important to tackle the problem as soon as possible. Leaving it running could lead to more damage, which will then cost even more. With your mileage, it could well be that your filter needs replacing. Perhaps you should also check whether the tank itself is clean. But as you say, it's best to get a professional in to assess it properly. My advice would be to go to the garage and have it checked out completely. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing major and that you can get away with it at little cost. Good luck with that! Please keep us up to date. Best regards!

Moin, Yes, I will get to my garage as soon as possible. Even if the repair costs something, it's still better than driving around with a car that could easily become a more serious problem. I will also pass on your advice to check the tank. I'll keep you posted on how it turns out. Thanks again for all the advice, it's been really helpful. See you then!
