Looking for solutions to problems with overheating and check engine lamp in BMW 3 Series Diesel (2018)

Check engine light on

|

Overheating

Hey guys, I have a strange problem with my BMW 3 Series Diesel (built in 2018). It no longer runs as usual. The check engine light comes on and it also overheats. I suspect it could be a malfunction with the controlled air flap. Have any of you ever experienced something similar and could give me some troubleshooting tips? How have your garages solved the problem and what was your experience? I am grateful for any help!

Hi, of course, I'm not an expert, but I do have some experience with this kind of stuff. We had a similar problem with our BMW 1 Series petrol (built in 2016). Imagine, the wiring harness of the radiator shutter was rubbed open behind the bumper. Read out the error codes, didn't help us much at first. So off to the workshop. They then replaced and repaired the wiring harness. It cost 215 euros, but after that it ran like a charm again! To be able to help you more precisely, a little more information about the engine and equipment of your 3 Series would be helpful. Have you already read out the fault memory or something similar? Is the fan constantly running at maximum speed? Just get in touch!

Hey, thanks for the answer! The fan on my car actually always runs normally and we have already read out the fault memory - unfortunately without any great results. The odometer is now at 48260 km, not many kilometers have been added since the last inspection. It's a 320d with the M package, if that helps. I just have the suspicion that it could have something to do with the air flap, but I'm really unsure... Maybe I should just go to the garage, even if I really wanted to avoid it. But I'm reassured that it was fixed for you afterwards! I hope it will work for me without having to dig too deep into my pockets...

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! With your 320d M package, I can tell you from my own experience that the controlled air flap can sometimes go wrong. In mine (same model as yours), it was defective at some point and the engine overheated. In the end, however, this was rectified after replacing the air flap. Perhaps the best option is to take it to the workshop if you can't manage it yourself. And yes, such repairs are never good for the wallet, but at least we solved the problem and the car ran perfectly again. Nevertheless, I hope it's something minor and that you don't have to dig too deep into your pockets! Keep us posted on what you find out.

Hey, that's super helpful, thanks! You're really right, I should stop torturing it and take it to the garage. Even if I would have liked to have spared myself that, safety always comes first - and above all I want my BMW to run as usual again. I find it reassuring that the repair solved the problem for you. Hopefully it's nothing worse for me and I'll get off lightly! Thanks again for your advice, I'll keep you posted as soon as I have any news. See you then!
