Looking for advice on how to fix engine problems in BMW 1 Series, model year 2018

Loud hissing on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Hello friends, do you have any experience with the BMW 1 series, model year 2018, gasoline engine? My Bimmer is behaving really strangely. I have a choppy engine behavior, loss of engine power, jerking when accelerating, loud hissing when accelerating and the car shakes when idling. The check engine light also comes on. I suspect that a leak in the intake system could be the culprit. Can you give me any tips on how your garage has fixed the problem and what your experiences have been? I would appreciate your advice and experience.

Hi, I'm not an expert in this case, but I've had this kind of experience with my 2016 BMW 1 Series, which is also a petrol engine. Due to similar symptoms, I took it to my garage. After some investigation, they found that there was a leak in the intake system, as you suspected. I had to pay about 1105 for the repair and the problem was solved. In general, I recommend you take your car to a good garage and tell them the problem. Due to my limited car knowledge, I can't explain in detail how they fixed it, but at the garage they were able to explain the problem to me well and did a professional job. Can you perhaps provide some more information about your problem? Which model variant are you driving exactly and have you ever had the fault memory read out? This could help to make a more precise diagnosis. Hope that helps you!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My 1 Series is a BMW 118i. I haven't had the fault memory read out yet, but that's a good tip, I'll do it. Last service was at 40806 km, but no major repairs or anything have been done since then. I just hope that the repair won't be too expensive. Keep your fingers crossed!

Hey, no problem! I totally understand your stress. With such annoying problems, car repairs can really become a money pit. With my 1 Series, reading the fault memory helped a lot. They were able to locate and repair the problem with the leak in the intake system very quickly. So, definitely give it a try. Regarding your model, the BMW 118i, I can say that I had similar symptoms. But of course it also depends on what the error code says. If it really is a leak in the intake system, then the costs could be similar to mine. Of course, this is only a rough estimate, the exact cost depends on the workshop and the extent of the damage. But just to reassure you a little, my BMW has been running absolutely smoothly since the repair. So, cheer up! I'll keep my fingers crossed that the repair is done quickly and as cheaply as possible!

Hey thanks, that actually reassures me a bit. Yes, you're right, reading the fault memory seems to be a good first port of call to get an accurate diagnosis and it's good to know that your cost for the same repair was around 1100 euros. I guess the hunt for a good garage is next. I just hope it's nothing too serious and the cost of the repair stays within reason. I really appreciate your help and thank you for sharing your experience with me! Keep your fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly. Bye and take care!

Hello, I had a very similar problem, but fortunately "only" a vacuum hose from the boost pressure system/turbocharger was defective due to a marten. The troubleshooting was relatively time-consuming, but the hose only cost a few euros. So my recommendation is to check the vacuum hoses as well
