Longer engine start and weak headlights on Skoda Octavia 2007

Dim or flickering lights

Weak battery when starting the engine

Engine hard to start

Hello friends, I'm currently having a few problems with my old darling, a Skoda Octavia, built in 2007, petrol engine, and it's already got quite a bit on the clock - almost 220,000 km. When driving off, the engine takes ages to start and the battery no longer seems to be the strongest. On top of that, the headlights are weak or flickering. I suspected that it had something to do with the fault in the engine control unit. I wanted to hear your opinions on whether any of you have ever had similar problems and how it went at the garage - my last experience with the garage was unfortunately not the best. Thanks in advance! Greetings

Hi, I had a similar problem with my car, a Skoda Superb, built in 2010. It doesn't have as many kilometers as your Octavia, but that didn't make the situation any less irritating. I also had long revs when starting and the lights came on after a while and also flickered occasionally. At the time, I had the same suspicions as you that it might have something to do with the engine control unit. At the workshop, it turned out that there was not only a problem with the battery, but also a fault with the alternator. This was a serious matter and required some work. Don't panic though, once the problem was fixed, everything ran smoothly again. I hope this helps you a little. All the best

Hi, thanks for your feedback and the info. It seems like our problems are quite similar. It's good to know that your car ran well again after the repair. Can I ask you how much it cost you to get it fixed at the garage? Oh, and has anything else cropped up since then, or has everything gone smoothly? Best regards

Hello, no problem, I'm happy to help. So, after the visit to the mechanic, the fault in the engine control unit was rectified. As far as I can remember, it cost around €330 to rectify the fault in the immobilizer. It may sound a bit high at first, but since then everything has been running like clockwork and the repair was worth every penny. Nothing else has come up since then, everything has run smoothly. I hope it will be just as successful for you! Best regards

Hello, thank you, that really helps me. It's reassuring to hear that everything can run smoothly even after a repair like this. I think I'll just go for it and take the car to the garage. Your information will help me to better understand what I might be facing. I will report how it went as soon as I have news. Best regards and thanks again
