I also had long revs when starting and the lights came on after a while and also flickered occasionally. At the time, I had the same suspicions as you that it might have something to do with the engine control unit. At the workshop, it turned out that there was not only a problem with the battery, but also a fault with the alternator. This was a serious matter and required some work. As far as I can remember, it cost around €330 to rectify the fault in the immobilizer. It may sound a bit high at first, but since then everything has been running like clockwork and the repair was worth every penny. Nothing else has come up since then, everything has run smoothly.
