Lexus RC Hybrid Owner Experiences Check Engine Light, Erratic Engine Performance, and Unpleasant Exhaust Odor; Suspects Misfires

Strong exhaust smell

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Hey! I'm dealing with an odd issue on my 2020 Lexus RC Hybrid lately. The check engine light is on, it out of nowhere turns off, and I'm noticing reduced engine power, an erratic engine, jerky acceleration, with a nasty exhaust odor to top it off. I'm suspecting it could be due to misfires but I'm not entirely sure. Any of you ever had something similar with your rides? How did your mechanic resolve it? Would love to hear your workshop stories and any suggestions.

Hey there, Sounds like you've got a bit of a pickle on your hands with that 2020 Lexus RC Hybrid. I had a somewhat similar experience with my 2018 Lexus RX. I'm far from being a motorhead, more of a some experience kinda guy, but from what I gathered from my workshop visits, it ended up being a defective fuel injector. Took my Lexus over to my local shop, they hooked up their fancy scanner and boom - got diagnosed with a faulty injection nozzle. Long story short, I had to fork out about 515 Euro to get that sucker replaced. Ireally stung but the lady runs like a dream now, no more check engine light, no more odd engine behavior! Your situation might be somewhat different though, so it's best to get it checked out professionally. Could you share more details about your car, its mileage, recent services or repairs done, etc? It will help zero in on the exact issue. Cheers, Replier

Hey Replier, Thanks for your input. Appreciate the insight about the fuel injector. I've run this baby for about 153024 KM now. My last service was around the 150k mark, nothing major, just regular maintenance. Since my last service, can't say I've had any repairs done or replaced any parts. It's been pretty smooth sailing till this problem. But you're right, best to take it to a pro and get that scanner hooked up. Hope it doesn't put too big a dent in my wallet though! Fingers crossed🤞 Cheers,

Howdy again, No worries at all, happy to help a fellow Lexus lover! So, with 153024 KM on your hybrid, it has seen some miles, hasn't it? Regular maintenance is top-notch👌. The scanner should be able to pinpoint the issue, and it doesn't always mean a big repair bill. Sometimes, it's just loose wiring, a dirty sensor, or something minor. Still, it's worth getting it checked out, especially given the symptoms you're experiencing. If it does turn out to be the fuel injector (as in my case), you might be looking at a similar cost. Keep in mind, though, every workshop varies in labor charges and parts costs. And remember that fixing this sooner will likely save you money and headaches in the long run. Ain't got no time for a misbehaving car, right? 😅 Best of luck. Do keep us posted on how it goes! Cheers, Replier

Hi Replier, You got that right, the last thing I need is a misbehaving car! 😅 Yep, she's been around the block a few times, but I love this car, so hoping it's nothing too serious. Your feedback really helps, along with giving me some peace of mind. I'll definitely update you all once I get the diagnostics done. Fingers crossed it's just a minor issue. Thanks a bunch for your help and well wishes. Let's see what the scanner gods say about this. 🤞 Wish me luck! Cheers,
