Hey there, your story sounded a lot like mine, it was just a few months back with my '19 Lexus LX. Started chugging black smoke out of nowhere and the engine warning light wouldn't quit either. The mechanic had to work on the DPF, a thorough cleaning did the trick though, no need for replacing. How much did you fork out on the DPF work and ECU update? It's always useful to have a rough idea of what it should cost, helps to avoid getting ripped off. Also, has anything else cropped up since you got it all sorted? Just trying to foresee any possible issues. Cheers!
Hey there yep, the repair was a bit steep, costing me about 1550 Euro. It's not cheap but it's either that or letting the issue grow into an even bigger one, as you surely already know. The steep cost was for fixing the DPF which was internally defective, and since then, touch wood, she's rolling smoothly. Haven't come across any other suspect signs or trouble since the mechanic did the works. Guess it was just a case of biting the bullet to avoid further issues, right? Shout if you need any more info, happy to help!
Thanks for all the insights, lads! It's comforting, in a strange way, to know I'm not the only one who's been through this. Yeah, I guess this is one of those times where money spent now will save a bigger headache and deeper pocket hit down the line. I'm not thrilled about shelling out around 1550 Euro but, as you said, better sort it before it progresses into something worse. If nothing else, this experience is a reminder to keep tabs on all things, major or minor, because they all do add up in the long run. Hopefully, this DPF issue won't repeat down the line after it gets sorted. I'll make sure to get a good mechanic this time around. Appreciate the tips! I'll heed your advice about getting a second opinion if they start mentioning replacement. Onwards and upwards, as they say! Keep you posted on how it goes. Cheers!
Hey, sounds like the same hassle I went through with my '19 Lexus LX diesel not long ago. Bloody thing also started emitting black smoke and felt like it was running rough. Turned out, my diesel particulate filter (DPF) was internally defective, exactly same signs you're seeing. It wasn't a simple issue - that black smoke was because of unburned diesel fuel and the engine light was a warning something's not right. DPF helps catch and store soot, but it has to go through a regeneration process to burn off this soot. When it doesn't, it gets blocked and that's most likely what's happened with yours. What needed doing was a deep cleaning of the DPF and an ECU update. It was a bit of a pain but gotta be done, can't ignore the warning signs. Know it's a bit nerve-wracking trusting mechanics again, but a good one should be able to sort you out. If they start talking replacement, get a second opinion. Good luck with it!
