Land Rover Won't Start? Bad Battery Sensor May Be Culprit

Hey everyone! Having some starting troubles with my 2007 Land Rover Discovery diesel (189k km). Takes forever to start when cold, and sometimes won't start at all. Battery seems weak during start-up. Pretty sure it might be a battery sensor issue, especially after a sketchy experience with my last mechanic. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and if you found a reliable fix. Getting a bit nervous about potential repair costs. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had almost identical issues with my 2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport diesel last winter. The cranking was super slow, and occasionally, the car wouldn't start at all. Turned out it was indeed a faulty battery sensor microprocessor. When I took it to the garage, they diagnosed it with their computer system. The sensor wasn't reading the battery charge correctly, causing starting problems. The repair involved replacing the entire battery management module. While it wasn't a major mechanical issue, it needed immediate attention because it could leave you stranded. They also checked the alternator and battery, both were actually fine. The whole thing took about half a day to fix. Been running smoothly for 8 months now. Hope this helps with your situation.

Thanks so much for sharing that, it sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing with my Discovery! Really helpful to know it was the battery management module in your case. Did you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? And has everything been working properly since you got it fixed, or have you noticed any other quirks popping up? Just want to know what I might be in for! Cheers!

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, I actually just got mine fixed last month and the total came to 315 Euro for replacing that faulty battery sensor microprocessor. Money well spent if you ask me! The car starts like a dream now, no more of those nerve-wracking slow cranks or failed starts. I can totally see why you're asking about other quirks, but honestly, since getting that battery management module sorted, everything's been running perfectly smooth. Such a relief! My mechanic explained that when these sensors go bad, they mess with the whole starting system even when your battery and alternator are fine. It's funny how such a small part can cause such a headache, right? But yeah, if your symptoms match what I had, I'd say get it checked out sooner rather than later. Trust me, it's worth fixing, no more winter morning surprises wondering if the car will start! Let me know how it goes with yours!

Hey, thanks for the detailed follow-up! Actually, I just got back from the mechanic today. You were spot on about everything! Took your advice and got it checked right away. The mechanic found the same issue, faulty battery management module. Cost me a bit more than yours, around 400 Euro, but they also did a full diagnostic check while they were at it. Honestly, such a relief to have it fixed! Started up perfectly this morning, no more of that awful slow cranking sound. The mechanic was great too, way better than my last one. Really took the time to explain everything and even showed me the old part. Funny how we both had the exact same problem! Thanks again for sharing your experience, helped me feel much more confident about getting it sorted. Sometimes it's just good to know you're not the only one dealing with these quirks! Take care!
