Land Rover Discovery Fan Fault Causing Dual System Failure

Overheating

|

Air conditioning blows warm air

Hey all! My 2020 Land Rover Discovery diesel (191,871 KM) is giving me headaches. The engine's overheating and AC's blowing hot air. Pretty sure it's the electric fan or its control module acting up. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Discovery? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Also, would appreciate recommendations for trustworthy mechanics who know their way around Land Rovers. Thanks in advance!

Had the same issue with my 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport diesel at 175K kilometers. Electric fan control unit was completely dead, causing both engine overheating and AC problems, exactly like your symptoms. Took mine to a certified specialist who diagnosed it right away. The control module had burned out, and it wasn't just a simple fix. They had to replace the entire fan assembly because the control unit is integrated. It's a fairly complex job as they need to partially dismantle the front end to access everything properly. The repair was pretty serious since overheating can damage the engine if you keep driving. After replacement, both the cooling and AC worked perfectly again. Would definitely recommend getting it fixed ASAP to avoid any engine damage. Tip: Make sure they check the coolant system thoroughly while they're at it. In my case, they also found a small coolant leak that could've caused problems later.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's super helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'm glad to hear you got it sorted out. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm trying to get a better idea of what I'm in for with this repair.

Hey there! Thanks for asking about the follow-up. Happy to report that after getting it fixed, my Range Rover Sport's been running like a charm! The total bill came to 480.00 € for the electric fan control unit replacement. Money well spent, if you ask me, because both the overheating and AC issues completely disappeared. The mechanic did a great job, they got right to the root of the problem and sorted it out properly. Since the repair (it's been several months now), I haven't had a single issue with the cooling system or AC. The engine temperature stays exactly where it should, and the AC blows nice and cold again. Just make sure you get it done sooner rather than later, you definitely don't want to risk any engine damage from overheating. Trust me, dealing with it promptly will save you from bigger headaches down the road. My car feels like new again in terms of cooling performance. Let me know if you need any other details about the repair!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! I bit the bullet and took my Discovery to a certified mechanic last week. You were spot on, it was the fan control unit causing all the trouble. Had to shell out a bit more than you did, around 550.00 € because they found some worn-out hoses that needed replacing too. The whole repair took about a day and a half, but wow, what a difference! The engine's running at perfect temperature now, and the AC is blasting cold air like it's brand new. Feels great not having to worry about that temperature gauge creeping up anymore. I should've done this weeks ago instead of putting it off. The mechanic I found was really thorough and even showed me all the old parts to explain what went wrong. Guess sometimes you just need that push from someone who's been through it before. Thanks again for helping me make the decision to get it fixed properly!
