Land Rover Discovery's Bouncy Ride Mystery Needs Solving

Excessive Bouncing

|

Uneven Ride Height

Hey everyone! My 2005 Land Rover Discovery (gas engine, 142,940 km) has been acting up lately. The car seems to sit unevenly, and I'm getting a lot of bounce while driving. My last mechanic suggested it might be a door sensor issue, but I'm not too confident in their diagnosis after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Really trying to avoid another frustrating mechanic visit. Thanks for any insights!

Hey there! I had very similar issues with my 2008 Land Rover LR3 (gasoline V8) last year. The uneven stance and bouncing were identical symptoms. Initially, the mechanics were looking at sensors too, but it turned out to be a failing air suspension compressor and a damaged cable connection to the height sensors. In my case, the cable had worn through due to rubbing against other components, causing intermittent connection issues. These faulty signals made the air suspension system behave erratically. Got it fixed at a Land Rover specialist garage, they replaced the worn cable and its connector, plus the compressor which was on its way out. It was quite a serious issue since bad air suspension can lead to unsafe driving conditions and potentially damage other components. Don't wait too long to get it checked, these symptoms usually don't fix themselves and typically get worse over time. Hope this helps with your diagnosis!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing with my Disco. I'm definitely going to have those specific parts checked out now. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repairs? And has everything been running smoothly since, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Great to hear back from you! I just wanted to follow up and let you know that my LR3 has been running perfectly since the repair, no more bouncing or uneven stance issues. The door contact signal problem that was initially suspected was actually fixed when they repaired the cable connection. Total cost for fixing the faulty cable and plug connection came to 155.00 €, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting! I'm so relieved I got it sorted when I did, can't believe what a difference it made. The car rides like a dream now, just like when I first got it. No other problems have cropped up since the repair, which is always a bonus with these vehicles, right? Let me know how you get on with yours, I'm curious to hear if you end up finding the same issue. These Land Rovers can be quirky, but they're worth the trouble when everything's working properly!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from seeing a Land Rover specialist mechanic today. You were spot on, it was indeed the air suspension system giving me grief. The mechanic found both a worn cable and a failing compressor, just like in your case. I bit the bullet and got it all fixed. The total came to a bit more than yours because I needed the compressor replaced too, but honestly, the difference in how it drives now is like night and day! No more weird bouncing or that awful uneven stance. Really grateful for your advice, it saved me from wasting time with another mechanic who might've misdiagnosed it again. The car's running beautifully now, smooth as butter on the road. Guess sometimes you need to talk to people who've been through the same thing to get to the bottom of these issues! Thanks again for all your help!
