Land Rover's Electrical Nightmare: Battery & Lights Warning

Hey everyone! Need some advice about my 2014 Land Rover Freelander diesel (193k km). Getting electrical gremlins, lights are going dim/flickering, and the battery seems weak during start-up. Dashboard shows electrical fault warnings. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar electrical issues in their Freelander? Any suggestions on what might be the culprit? Could be terminal 30 related, but I'd love to hear your experiences before heading to another shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had similar issues with my 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport diesel (around 170k km). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced a few months back. When I brought it to the garage, they diagnosed multiple issues: the alternator wasn't charging properly, and the battery was completely worn out. The alternator was putting out inconsistent voltage, which explained the flickering lights and warning messages. They had to replace both the alternator and battery. It turned out to be quite a serious issue that needed immediate attention, you don't want to risk getting stranded somewhere. My mechanic mentioned that these electrical problems can cascade into other systems if left unchecked. The whole job took about a day, and since then, everything's been running perfectly, no more flickering lights or startup issues. I'd definitely recommend getting it checked soon, as electrical problems rarely fix themselves. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I've been worried about getting stranded too, so hearing your solution is really helpful. Would you mind sharing roughly how much you ended up paying for the alternator and battery replacement? Also, just curious, have you had any other electrical niggles since getting it fixed? My Freelander has been pretty reliable until now, but I want to make sure I catch any related issues early.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! I actually just had this fixed about two weeks ago, and I've got good news, it wasn't as bad as my initial situation with both the alternator and battery. Turned out the main issue was indeed that Terminal 30 interruption I mentioned before, plus a drained battery that needed replacing. The total came to 290€ for the battery replacement and fixing that Terminal 30 connection. Much better than I expected, honestly! Since getting it sorted, the car's been running like a dream, no more flickering lights, warning messages, or start-up problems. It's like having a different car! To answer your question about other electrical issues, nope, absolutely nothing since the repair. Everything's working perfectly now. Just make sure you get it checked soon, these electrical gremlins can be a real pain if they're left too long. Trust me, it's worth getting it sorted quickly! Let me know how you get on with yours, always interested to hear how these fixes work out for others!

Thanks for all the detailed info! Just wanted to update everyone, I got my Freelander checked out yesterday. You were right about getting it done quickly! The mechanic I found was actually great, really took the time to explain everything. Funny enough, my issue was a bit different. The alternator was fine, but they found corroded battery terminals and a faulty voltage regulator. Repair was pretty reasonable at around 200€, way less than I feared. The mechanic cleaned up all the connections and replaced the regulator. Started it this morning and what a difference! No more flickering lights, and it fires up instantly. Such a relief! Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Sometimes you just need that push to get things sorted, right? Thanks again for helping me figure this out. Nothing beats getting advice from people who've been through similar issues. Time to enjoy my problem-free Freelander again!
