Kia Stonic Diesel Experiencing Power Loss, Rough Idle, and Black Smoke: Possible Boost Pressure Sensor Issue?

Loud hissing on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Shaking while idling

Hey gearheads, I drive a 2021 Kia Stonic diesel with a bit over 189k on the clock. Lately, she's been spewing black smoke when I hit the gas, her check engine light's blazing, and she's losing power. Engine feels sketchy, kinda jerky on acceleration and hissing louder than a pissed-off goose. She's also been stalling and shaking when idling. I'm thinking it could be a wonky boost pressure sensor. Anyone had similar issues with their ride? Any solid mechanic recommendations? Last one I went to was a total rip-off. Can't afford another one of those. Cheers!

Hey, I can get where you're coming from. I drive a 2018 Kia Rio and experienced something pretty similar a few months back. Jerky acceleration, hissing noises, and occasional stalling, just like your ride. Turned out my waste gate valve was defective. The mechanic said that's a crucial component in regulating the turbocharger's boost pressure. Wouldn't wanna guess whether that's what's messing with your ride, but it does sound pretty suspect. It's a serious problem if it's the case, as it affects the overall performance of the engine. To fix it, they had to replace the whole waste gate valve. The job involved dismantling a significant part of the turbocharger system which was definitely not a weekend job! That said, it's pretty important you have it checked out pronto. A trustworthy garage should know how to fix it. Good luck!

Hey, geez, sounds like quite a headache you went through with your Kia Rio. Waste gate valve issue, huh? That doesn't sound like a cheap repair job considering they had to dismantle quite a bit of the turbocharger system. Do you happen to remember, roughly, how much the whole fixing process put you out of pocket? Oh, and since they sorted it, has everything been running smoothly or any other gremlins popped their heads up? Just trying to brace myself for what's potentially coming my way. Cheers!

Hey there! Yeah, it was definitely a bit of a pain, not gonna lie. The whole repair job for that waste gate valve wasn't a walk in the park for my wallet. Put me back by a good 860 Euro--a bit steep, but given the degree of work involved on that turbocharger system, I guess it was reasonable? But hey, silver lining was the mechanic took a look at my boost pressure sensor since I already had it in the shop. It had indeed been acting wonky. Good news is, got that fixed too and it didn't put me any further in the red. Since then? It's been smooth cruising thankfully! Not a single pesky gremlin in sight. I tell ya, it's such a relief to have the Kia running like its old self again! So fingers crossed, your Stonic'll be back in shape in no time too. Hang in there!

Hey, 860 Euro, yeesh. That's a tidy sum but if it keeps the Stonic purring then I suppose it's a necessary pain. Reassuring to know your Rio's been running fine since, though. Gives me some hope. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll get her checked out as soon as possible. Gotta bite the bullet and just do it, I reckon. Plus, I've got a better idea about what I might be dealing with. Here's hoping those Gremlins keep their distance for both of us, eh? Thanks again! Cheers!
