Jeep Compass HVAC Dead: Temp Sensor Investigation

Looking for advice on my 2008 Jeep Compass (gas engine, 89891 km). Getting error messages in the dashboard and the HVAC system wont turn on at all. My mechanic mentioned a faulty temperature sensor at the heat exchanger, but after a bad experience with them, I want to get some second opinions. Has anyone dealt with similar cooling system issues on their Compass? What was the actual problem and repair cost in your case?

Had a similar situation with my 2011 Jeep Patriot last winter. The HVAC system completely stopped responding, showing error codes on the dash display. Initially thought it was just a sensor malfunction, but diagnostic testing revealed more extensive issues. The root cause turned out to be a failed control module combined with a faulty temperature sensor in the engine cooling system. The sensor calibration was completely off, causing the system to report incorrect readings. This affected both the climate control and engine cooling management. The repair required: Replacing the main HVAC control unit, Installing a new temperature sensor, Recalibrating the entire system It was classified as a serious repair since the faulty readings could potentially lead to engine overheating if left unaddressed. The whole job took about 4 hours at the shop. Worth noting that in these Jeep models, when the temperature sensor fails, it often takes the control unit with it. Would recommend having both components checked thoroughly rather than just replacing the sensor alone. The symptoms you describe match this issue exactly. Suggest getting a second opinion from a certified Jeep specialist who can properly diagnose the entire cooling system.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Patriot. Did you remember the total cost for fixing the control module and temperature sensor? I had the same repair done on my Compass last month, and I am curious to compare prices. Also, have you noticed any other cooling system issues since the repair was completed?

After getting the work done at the certified shop, I havent experienced any cooling system problems. The temperature gauge has been working perfectly, which confirms the sensor malfunction was properly fixed. The total repair bill came to 980 Euro for replacing the air conditioning control unit and addressing the defective temperature sensor heat exchanger. Looking back, it was worth every cent since the system now works flawlessly. The cooling system maintains consistent performance, and the temperature readings are accurate. I understand your concern about costs, these repairs arent cheap, but neglecting them can lead to more serious issues down the line. Just make sure any repair shop you choose has experience with Jeep cooling systems, as proper sensor calibration is crucial for these models.

Thanks for your help and input everyone. After getting multiple quotes, I finally got my Compass fixed at a different certified Jeep shop last week. The total came to 850 Euro for replacing both the control module and temperature sensor. They also did a complete system diagnostic to ensure there werent any other issues with the coolant leak potential or related problems. The repair took about 3 hours and the HVAC system is now working perfectly. The temperature readings are stable and all error messages have cleared from the dashboard. The new shop did a thorough job explaining the vehicle maintenance needed and even showed me the old failed parts. This experience taught me to always get a second opinion for major repairs. While the cost was significant, having a properly functioning cooling system gives me peace of mind. No issues with the vehicle since the fix was completed.
