Issues with Toyota 4Runner Diesel 2005: Check engine light, poor engine performance and potential EGR valve problem

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2005 Toyota 4Runner, diesel with 67,295km on the clock. The check engine light is on, the engine just stalls, there is a lack of power, the engine runs rough, the exhaust smells extremely bad and the car shakes when idling. I've also had trouble with my mechanic in the past and am now a bit worried. I suspect this could be due to the EGR valve. Has anyone had similar experiences and how did you solve the problem? What was your experience at the mechanic?

Hey, so I had something similar with my 2008 Toyota Hilux (although not exactly the same symptoms). The mechanic found that my EGR valve was faulty and stuck. Yes, it's a serious problem, can significantly affect engine efficiency and in the worst case can lead to engine damage. My mechanic replaced the EGR valve and the car is now running perfectly, no more complications. Your problem definitely sounds like a stuck EGR valve. Would recommend you get it checked by a good mechanic. Hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for the tip about the EGR valve, your experience sounds really helpful! Do you remember roughly how much the repair cost you? And has anything similar or different come up again since then, or has it been running perfectly since then?

Hey, you're welcome! The repair cost me around €355 at the time. Since the mechanic fixed the problem with the malfunction in the EGR valve, nothing similar or anything else has come up. My Toyota has been running like clockwork ever since. So don't worry, you can fix it!

You really helped me a lot, thank you! I feel reassured now. 355 sounds fair and if that means my car will run great again, then I'm happy to pay it. I have an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow and will tell him about the problem with the EGR valve. Thanks again for your help!

Hello Dolberg50, It would be useful if you mention what error codes you noticed. You could temporarily clear EGR-related error codes using an OBD-II diagnostic tool. Please keep us updated on your progress and let us know if you have any further questions. Best Regards, Carly Team.

Hello Bouba_31, The error codes P0400 or P040000 are related to the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system. It seems like the new EGR valve you installed might not be functioning properly or there could be an issue with the wiring or connectors. I would recommend checking the wiring and connectors for any damage or loose connections. If everything seems fine, you might want to consider getting the EGR valve checked or replaced again. Please keep us updated on your progress and let us know if you have any further questions.
