Issues with Battery and Dim Lights in a 2016 Dacia Dokker: Seeking Advice

Weak battery when starting the engine

Dim or flickering lights

Hey fellow petrolheads, I've been having a weird issue with my 2016 Dacia Dokker (gasoline engine). Recently, starting the engine puts a strain on the battery and the car's lights are dim or keep flickering. I’ve got a hunch it might be due to undervoltage in the vehicle but I could really use your expertise. Anyone experienced something similar or gotten this glitch sorted out in a workshop? Any tips to narrow down the problem would be appreciated. Cheers!

Hey there! Sounds like you've got a tiring battery issue on your hands. Funny enough, I've encountered something similar with my 2014 Dacia Logan (Just a different model, same brand). I’m just a regular joe with a bit of hands-on experience, not a professional mechanic or anything. In my case, it was indeed an empty/defective battery causing similar symptoms. I drove it down to my local workshop, they ran a few tests, and confirmed it was the battery, and not anything else like the alternator. In the end, they replaced the battery, that cost me about 290 Euro. In order to pinpoint the trouble in your case, it might be helpful to get some more details about your vehicle, like is it showing any specific warning lights, or are there any noises? Anyhow, getting your battery checked out first could be a good start, I reckon. Hope that helps! Cheers!

Hey, thanks for pitching in! I was leaning towards the whole defective battery theory myself. To answer your questions: Nope, there are no warning lights or strange noises so far. It's just that darn flickering and a overworked engine start. My last service was done not too long ago with the odometer reading at around 111952KM. I suppose I'll take your advice and try to dig around a bit more, probably get the battery tested at my local garage to be sure. Fingers crossed it's just a battery swap and nothing more serious or expensive. Cheers for the help!

No worries, happy to help! It definitely sounds like your Dokker might be going through what my Logan has. Maybe it is the battery, but I would also recommend you to check the alternator. Sometimes it's not charging the battery enough, and it can mimic the symptoms of a dying battery. Remember, the dim lights and flickering are usually associated with lacking power, which comes from either the alternator not charging the battery properly or the battery itself being unable to hold the charge. So it's not terrible, just needs some attention. Take it for a spin at your local garage and let them have a peek under the hood. Typically their tools can diagnose if it's the battery or the alternator (or something else altogether) quite quickly. It's probably the least nerve-wracking route at this point. And yeah, keep those fingers crossed! Don't worry, Dacia is a tough beast, you should be back on the road in no time. Looking forward to hearing how it unfolds. All the best! Cheers!

Cheers! That's some excellent advice, I didn't think about the alternator. It's always good to consider all possibilities. I'll definitely have them check out both the battery and the alternator at the garage. I'll take the old beast for a spin and let's hope she just has a minor hiccough and nothing major. Promise to keep you posted on the outcome. Thanks for taking the time to help out - much appreciated! All the best to you as well and let's cross paths on the road some time! Cheers!
