Irregular gear change and ABS warning light on Toyota Corolla, model year 2008: experiences and solutions

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Whining or grinding noises

ABS warning light

Hey guys, I'm worried about my Toyota Corolla, built in 2008 with a gasoline engine and already 250540 KM on the clock. Lately my gearbox has been doing strange things and changing gears erratically, the ABS warning light is on all the time and there are groaning noises or a loud grinding noise coming from the engine compartment. I suspect that it might have something to do with the transfer case emergency running control. I had a really bad experience with my garage last time and this time I want to be well prepared. Have any of you had similar problems and can tell me about your experiences? I would be particularly interested to know if the problem was solved well by the garage and how much it might cost. Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hello, it seems that you have similar problems as I had with my 2011 Toyota Avensis. I also had the ABS warning light flashing repeatedly and the gearbox was no longer as smooth. It turned out that the control unit was faulty. It was quite a job, as the transmission and ABS system are controlled by the control unit. Your symptoms sound very similar. In my case, the workshop replaced the control unit and the problem was solved. Of course it's a serious problem, but don't be discouraged. If you go to a good garage that knows about Toyotas, they will certainly be able to solve the problem. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. That really sounds like the same problem I have with my Corolla. It's great that it was solved so smoothly for you. I would also be interested to know how much you paid for the repair at the garage? Can you still remember that? And have you had any problems with it since then or did everything go like clockwork? Thanks again in advance!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help. Yes, I would also have been happy if someone had been able to relieve my stress back then. It's really unpleasant to be alone with such worries. So the repair did cost me something. 525€ to be exact. That was the price of the new control unit and the work involved in the repair. But after that, everything ran like clockwork. Since then, I haven't had any further problems with the transfer case emergency running control. But believe me, the investment was definitely worth it. With a well-functioning control unit, my Toyota now drives much more smoothly and a little bit of safety is worth something. So keep your head up and good luck!

Hey, thank you very much for all the information and words of encouragement. You have helped me a lot. 525€ is a lot, but it's a small price to pay for peace of mind and security. I realize now that it's definitely worth the investment. I'm going to make an appointment with the garage first thing tomorrow morning. Hopefully everything will go as smoothly as it did for you. I'll get back to you as soon as there are any updates. Thanks again and have a great day!
