Irregular engine running and increased fuel consumption in my 2015 Toyota Auris - suspected defective lambda sensor

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Hi guys, I have a small problem with my 2015 Toyota Auris (gasoline, has just 28533 km down). Recently, while driving, it blew black smoke out of the exhaust when accelerating. The engine light flashes, the engine runs unevenly and jerks during acceleration. On top of that, it's really slowing down and fuel consumption has gone through the roof. I suspect the lambda sensor. Have any of you ever had such symptoms and how did your mechanic deal with the problem? I would be really grateful for a few tips or similar experiences. Especially after the last visit to the mechanic, I don't want to be ripped off again. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2012 Toyota Yaris. Mine was also leaking at the exhaust and it was also noticeable that it no longer pulled so well and the car also ran unusually. The engine light didn't flash on mine, but the jerking when accelerating was there. You could be right with your assumption about the lambda sensor. In my case, the catalytic converter and part of the exhaust had to be replaced in the end. That was a lot of work, but afterwards it ran like clockwork again. The next time I go to the mechanic, I would describe these symptoms to him and, if necessary, point out the lambda sensor and the catalytic converter. The problem could be many things, but it sounds like you could be on the right track. All the best with it!

Hey, thanks for your reply and the help, really nice of you. Do you remember what you paid for the repair back then? And have there been any other problems since then or did everything run smoothly after the repair?

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! So, I had to pay €265 to have the exhaust repaired. I was a bit shocked at the price at first, but afterwards everything ran as normal again, so it was worth it in the end. I haven't had any problems with the defective lambda sensor since the visit to the mechanic, really none at all. So you can imagine, the car drives like a dream now compared to before. I hope your repair goes just as smoothly!

Great, that sounds really encouraging! I'll take it up with the mechanic and hope that it won't be too expensive. Your experience is definitely reassuring. Thanks again for your help and for sharing your experience. Wish you a continued smooth ride!
