Infiniti QX: Severe Misfiring and Stalling Mystery

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Hey everyone, I have a 2012 Infiniti QX with multiple issues that started recently. The engine is misfiring badly power loss, jerking during acceleration, and really rough idle with occasional stalls. Check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be related to the tank ventilation system, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did your mechanic find and how was it fixed? Any feedback would be really helpful.

Hey there! I'm sorry to hear about your issues. I have some experience working with similar cars, as I own a 2010 Infiniti FX35. Last year, I actually faced comparable problems with my engine misfiring and rough idling. After taking it to my trusted workshop, they diagnosed it was indeed related to the ventilation system – some cracked hoses were causing vacuum leaks. They added new hoses and everything went back to normal. The whole repair cost me about 175 Euro. However, since every case can be different, it would be helpful if you could share: How many miles are on your QX? When was your last maintenance service? Are there any other warning lights besides the check engine light? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My QX has 244614 KM on the clock. The symptoms you described sound pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any specific smell or unusual noise before getting it fixed? My mechanic is booked solid for the next two weeks, so I'm trying to gather as much info as possible before taking it in.

Hey again! Thanks for asking about those specifics. Yeah, actually, before I got my FX35 fixed, I did notice a pretty distinct fuel smell, especially when the car was idling. There was also this weird whistling sound coming from the engine bay kind of like air escaping, you know? Looking back, those were definitely signs of the vacuum leak caused by those cracked hoses. Since you're mentioning your mileage (244k km is pretty close to what mine had when this happened I was around 230k), it makes even more sense that it could be the ventilation system. These hoses tend to get brittle and crack around this mileage in our Infinitis. While you're waiting for your mechanic appointment, I'd suggest checking under the hood for any obvious cracked or disconnected hoses that's actually how I first spotted mine. Just be careful with the engine hot, of course. Also, if you're getting that fuel smell like I did, try not to drive it too much until you can get it checked out. Hope this helps a bit more! Let me know if you need any other specific details about what I experienced with my FX35.

Thanks so much for all these details this is super helpful! I actually do notice a slight whistling sound and fuel smell, just like you described. It's pretty reassuring to know you had such a similar issue and it wasn't something catastrophically expensive to fix. I'll definitely take a careful look under the hood tomorrow morning to check for any obvious hose problems. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience it'll help me have a much more informed conversation with my mechanic when I finally get in to see him. Thanks again!
