Infiniti M Brake Light Failure Signal Problem?

Brake light not working

Hey everyone, having trouble with my 2009 Infiniti M. The brake lights stopped working and I suspect it might be related to a brake light signal issue. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem? Would like to know what kind of repairs were needed and how your mechanic fixed it. Any insight would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I had a very similar issue with my 2007 Infiniti G35 last year (I have some experience working on cars). The brake lights suddenly stopped working, and I was really worried about safety. Turned out it was just the brake light switch under the brake pedal that had gotten stuck. I didn't even need to go to a workshop just reached under there, wiggled it a bit, and it started working again! Apparently, it's a common issue if dirt/debris gets in there. Could you tell me if you've checked if all brake lights are out, or just some of them? Also, does your brake pedal feel any different than usual? This info would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same simple fix I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's just hit 31446 KM and had its latest service about a month ago. All three brake lights are completely out, and the pedal feels totally normal no change in pressure or anything weird when braking. Might try checking that switch you mentioned before taking it to the shop. Really hope it's just something simple like that! Let me know if you think there's anything else I should look out for.

Hey again! Based on what you're describing with all three brake lights being out simultaneously and the normal pedal feel, it really does sound identical to what I dealt with on my G35. Since you mentioned yours was just serviced, I wonder if someone might have accidentally bumped the brake light switch during the work. In my case, after I found the switch under the brake pedal, I actually ended up cleaning it with some electrical contact cleaner and that solved it permanently. Super cheap fix! Just make sure you have someone watch the brake lights while you press the pedal after cleaning it to confirm they're working. One thing I forgot to mention from my experience if the switch is the culprit, you might notice that your cruise control also acts up (if you use it). That's because they're connected to the same switch circuit, at least in our Infinitis. Did you notice anything like that? Just be careful when you're checking the switch there's not much room under there. Let me know how it goes after you take a look! Fingers crossed it's the same simple fix I had.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! You know what now that you mention it, my cruise control has been a bit wonky lately. I didn't connect the dots until you brought it up! I'll definitely try cleaning that switch tomorrow morning already ordered some electrical contact cleaner from Amazon. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything, especially the tip about having someone watch the brake lights while I test it. You probably just saved me a hefty mechanic bill! I'll update you once I've given it a shot. Thanks again for all your help this community is awesome!
