Infiniti FX35 Power Loss: Knock Sensor Warning Signs

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Weird engine noise

Loss of engine power

Hey everyone! My 2004 Infiniti FX35 is acting up lately engine light is on, losing power, shaking during acceleration, burning more gas than usual, and making strange noises under the hood. I suspect it might be the knock sensor, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'd really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what it took to fix it, especially if you've had knock sensor issues. Looking forward to your insights!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars and had a really similar issue with my 2006 Infiniti G35 last year. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with! The engine light, power loss, and weird noises got me worried too. Took it to my local mechanic and turned out it was just a defective cable and plug connection near the knock sensor. Total repair was around 95 Euro not too bad considering how much trouble it was causing. The fix was pretty straightforward once they found the actual problem. What's your mileage like? And have you noticed if the symptoms get worse during certain conditions (like when it's cold or during hard acceleration)? Knowing these details would help figure out if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Take care!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 88180 KM and just had a service last month. Yeah, I've noticed it gets particularly rough during cold starts and when I'm trying to pass someone on the highway. Good to know it wasn't too expensive of a fix for you. Been worried it might be something major! Your experience definitely gives me hope it might just be a connection issue. Will probably get it checked out this week to be on the safe side. Thanks again for the help!

Hey again! I totally get what you mean about those cold starts and highway passes that's exactly how mine acted up too! Just to update you: after getting my G35 fixed, I haven't had any issues since (going on about 15 months now). Actually, funny thing my car had similar mileage when this happened, around 90000 KM. The loose connection was causing the knock sensor to send weird signals to the ECU, which is why the car was acting all funky. Once they fixed that cable connection, it was like having a completely different car smooth acceleration, normal fuel consumption, and all those annoying symptoms just disappeared. Just a heads up though make sure they check all the connections thoroughly. In my case, the mechanic initially thought it was the sensor itself, but double-checking the wiring saved me from unnecessarily replacing the entire sensor. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out! Hope it's the same simple fix for you.

Thanks so much for the follow-up! Really appreciate you sharing those extra details about your experience. It's super reassuring to hear that your car's been running smoothly for over a year now. And wow, what a coincidence about the similar mileage! I'll definitely mention the wiring connection issue to my mechanic when I take it in could save me some money if they don't have to replace the whole sensor. Got an appointment scheduled for Thursday morning, actually. Thanks again for all your help and advice I'll update you once I know what's going on with mine! Really hoping it's just a simple wiring fix like yours was.
