Infiniti EX: Cold Start Nightmare Needs Fixing

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Car won't start

|

Longer cold start time

Hey everyone, need some advice about my 2010 Infiniti EX diesel (233K km). Recently having trouble with cold starts taking forever, and sometimes the car just won't start at all. Battery seems pretty weak during start attempts. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about going back. Anyone dealt with similar starting issues? Thinking it might be the battery sensor, but not sure. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and maybe recommendations for reliable mechanics who know their way around Infinitis. Thanks!

Hey there, had the exact same issue with my 2013 Infiniti FX diesel last winter. The battery sensor microprocessor was indeed the culprit discovered this after two failed starts left me stranded in a parking lot. Got it fixed at an Infiniti specialist garage. The repair involved replacing the entire battery sensor unit because these microprocessors can't be repaired separately. The mechanic mentioned it's actually a common issue with these models once they hit higher mileage. The symptoms matched yours perfectly slow cold starts and inconsistent starting behavior even with a healthy battery. It's definitely a job for someone who knows Infinitis, as they need specific diagnostic tools to properly reset and calibrate the new sensor. Not a catastrophic issue, but it won't fix itself and will only get worse. My car's been starting perfectly since the repair. If you're looking for a new mechanic, I'd strongly suggest finding an Infiniti specialist rather than a general garage. They'll know exactly what to look for. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to know I'm not alone with this issue. Good to hear you got it sorted with the battery sensor replacement. Quick question do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Just trying to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if I should expect any follow-up issues. Cheers!

Hey again! Yeah, absolutely happy to share more details! I actually just had this fixed a few weeks ago and can tell you exactly what it cost I paid 315€ for the whole job. The mechanic had to replace the battery sensor microprocessor since it was completely shot, and I have to say, it was money well spent! Since the repair, my FX has been starting like a dream no more of those annoying cold start issues or unusual no-starts that used to drive me crazy. It's like having a new car again! Haven't noticed any other weird stuff either, so it really seems like the battery sensor was the only problem. Just make sure you find a good Infiniti specialist who knows what they're doing with these cars. The diagnostic equipment they use is pretty specific to Infiniti, and they'll need to properly calibrate everything after the replacement. Trust me, once you get it fixed, you'll wish you'd done it sooner. Those morning panics about whether the car will start or not are definitely not something you want to deal with long-term! Let me know if you need any other info!

Appreciate the detailed follow-up! You've convinced me to bite the bullet and get it fixed. Actually, I just got back from a specialist mechanic yesterday took your advice and found one who specifically works with Infinitis. You were spot on about the battery sensor! Got it replaced and the whole thing cost me about 330€, pretty close to what you paid. The mechanic was super professional, explained everything clearly, and got it done in just a few hours. Had my first proper cold start this morning and what a difference! The car fired up instantly, no more of that endless cranking or those nerve-wracking moments wondering if I'll make it to work. Thanks again for pushing me in the right direction saved me from a lot more headaches and probably some roadside assistance calls too! Sometimes you just need that extra push from someone who's been through the same thing. Cheers!
